Consigning an RV to Dealership--Experiences Please
We currently have our RV for sale and have posted it on numerous sites. No luck.
Do any of you know about consigning an RV to say...Camping World or a local larger dealership? Good idea?
Opinions appreciated!!
Thank You

We bought our MH from CW in April '13. The salesman was very knowledgeable, friendly and patient with all our questions and poking into every nook and cranny of the MH.
The finance dept. personnel however, tried to change the figures to gain another $4,000 over agreed selling price. After I balked and arose from my chair to go home, the woman said, wait a minute so I can refigure the contract, as I'm not the one who completed the form. Numbers were changed to reflect the agreed price, we signed and drove it home..
Fast forward to Nov. I received a check in the mail from the state's Attorney General office, with a letter explaining this was a refund due me from a class action lawsuit against CW for financial business practices.
That's the story from my end;I don't know how the seller came out.
Check out PPL Motorhomes and similar large consignment dealers across the country too.
My viewpoint on this subject is this; the choice is to sell it yourself, tend to dealing with potential buyers, advertising, showing, cleaning, etc, OR, sell on consignment pay the consignment fee while they do all the work and deal with lookers. There are some pitfalls to consignment selling. I'm sure you have already educated yourself about those.

We took ours down to Houston at PPL. We named our price and it sold within a month. There are a lot of shoppers there. We were impressed.

Just be aware that your insurance might not cover the coach if it is on consignment

Two days after we dropped of our motorhome at a local consignment dealer and before they had it listed on their website they called with an offer. I told the dealer to accept the offer. A Good experience.

I put a travel trailer on a dealer's lot in Salinas, California several years ago. I had a friend go and pretend to be a buyer.
They priced it way above market and used the consignments to draw people into their establishment.
From the highway it looked like they had a ton of RV's and their game was to get you on the lot and then sell you their new RV's.
I took it back after a month. The guy went out of business about a year after that.

The single biggest problem is the present owners price,.they feel their GEM is worth. If you have a reasonable price on what you have it will sell. If you think yours if worth more than everyone like it out there, it won't.

A friend has her 2007 Phaeton on consignment at a CW. CW told them they could sell it quickly, but have not had a single offer in 4 months. Phaetons are popular - you have to wonder why there has been nothing! I'm thinking the sales people push the dealer stock rather than the consigned units. Perhaps because they make much less commission on a consignment sale.
In any case, be skeptical of their promises of a quick sale or high prices.

I bought a flawless MH at a bargain basement price that was on consignment at CW in St. Augustine, Fl. We drove it home the day we first saw it and it has performed spectacularly well over the five years and 40k miles since. After the sale the salesman told me that the owner had just brought it in that morning and was motivated to take my offer due to the tanking economy at the time.

We sold two DPs through PPL. We lived in a rural area where many people would not make the drive to see our coach.
We dropped the RV off, gave an honest description of the condition of things, and were realistic about our price expectations. In both cases, we had no hassles, and had a check in our hands in less than a month.
Were we to sell our current coach, I would likely try craigslist for a few weeks. If nothing happened, I would make the two-day drive to PPL and leave it for them to sell. What is the cost of six months of tire-kickers, looky-loos, scary people, and whiners invading your weekends?

We sold ours on Craigslist, to some very nice folks that were just as turned off by dealers as we are. Down here in S. Fla-it's tough to find someone you can trust with your expensive Motorhome.
Our plan was to give Craigslist a try-then take it to the best consignment place we could find. We never had to explore that option, but, no location is too far to find the right Broker.

Tell her to send a friend in pretending to be interested in her coach and see what's going on. That's what i did and discovered they were just using it to draw people in and then push their own RV's.

PPL. We didn't sell, but purchased. As far as using them for a trade in......terrible, whatever theNADA book is LESS options, you will get 50%.
Like they way they handled our purchase, will use them if we sell in the coming years. We too, live in a remote location.
