Credit Card Denial

Just took our first long trip with our new (to us) diesel pusher. We were using truck stops as they are much easier to maneuver than car islands to refuel especially with a tow car behind. We found out that it seems both Pilot/Flying J and Petro stations do not like personal credit cards used at the diesel islands. They are OK to use but you have to go into the station to have them run the card. I have a bum leg that makes it difficult to walk any distance so this is a problem for me.

Has anyone else found this to be true? Any solutions to avoid the hassle?

If Pilot/FJ is your primary source then get their card which is administered by GoodSam. It will start the pump at the card reader & give you a discount off the cash price.

are you a good sam member ?? if so sign up for the RV Plus charge card for Flying J / Pilot. No interest as charges are deducted from your checking account each month and you do not have to go in and pre pay. Just pull up either at the RV islands or truck side and use the card. You also get a discount on diesel and gasoline.

When ever possible I use the Flying J "RV island diesel pumps".
The "RV island pumps" accept most personal credit cards, (which starts the pump...and prints a receipt when I finish fueling)...without the hassel of going into the station.

Had this happen to me three weeks ago at a flying J in South Carolina. I was at the RV pumps getting gas for the V10. The pump accepted the Good Sam discount card but denied my personal credit card. I had to go in and get the pump set up $$ and then go back out and pump the gas. The Flying J staff were of no help and did not seem to be concerned there was an issue. I thought it might be due to the recent address change moving my domicile to FL. Not sure after reading your post.

IMO. if anyone working at a Flying J, (and/or most other places), actually knew, (or cared about), anything other than when "quitting time" was, they would have a GOOD job.

The old RV discount card has been discontinued. It was the one that you swiped along with a CC to get the cash less discount price.

Now, the Good Sam/Pilot-Flying J charge card is the card that will start the pump and set the price. It's a charge card so it doesn't work in combo with another CC.

The few times we fueled at Flying J on our most recent 8,000 mile trip from beginning of May to beginning of August this year used my Good Sam non-credit card then scanned my Costco's American Express Card. The GS card gave me cash price, and the AE card gave me another 3% of the fuel cost back in the form of a check we can use at Costco.
When did they stop allowing the GS card to be used for cash price.?

Jim.....I'll throw out another thought, not to bring up a big debate, but just as another choice. As you get comfortable with driving your new to you coach and towing a towed, venture out a little and try something other than the truck stops. Many new stations being built these days have large islands and easy access. Typically, you fuel up close to home the most and soon learn where the large stations are and on the routes you use most. Once you've identified a station where you fit, it will be much easier. Even while camping and sightseeing with your towed, check out the local area and make note of the large stations/best prices while you're out and about.

I mention all of this because most, not all, truck stops are anywhere from .08 to .12 cents more a gallon. We often use the Gas Buddy App to find fuel along our route of travel. Many may not know, but often the Gas Buddy App shows photos of the station. We also seek out Indian Casinos when possible. Many have large stations and usually have the best prices. Before anyone says it, we only use high supply fuel stations, no mom and pop single pumps.

Lastly, we use the Pentagon Federal credit card, available to anyone, that gives 5% off of fuel, not 5 cents, but 5%. Their only restriction is that you pay at the pump. That brings up the last consideration. In this day and age, I NEVER allow my credit card to leave my sight.

I know fuel is currently cheap right now, but saving .20 - .25 cents a gallon on a fill up is still lunch money.

J's have RV only pumps and some stations have Diesel at the car islands

But yes that is common, the reason is simple.. TAXES.. Many states tax truckers big time.. I won't go into the reasons why this is good or bad but let's say I could argue either side. When you use a personal CC at a Commercial pump the station (or rather it's computers) feel you might not be needing to pay the higher Commercial fuel tax so they invite you to come in and get a reduction.

In other states the tax is uniform.. but the computer runs the same program.

The older RV Cards are not being discontinued. If you have them you can still use them and if you had the pump start feature it still works. I have used my old card for the last 4 weeks from Ohio to CA and back. They are only issuing those two new cards now, but the others are still good

TAXES! Between 8 cents a gallon (Alaska) and 64 cents a gallon (you've got a friend in Pennsylvania) plus another 24 cents (federal) for diesel fuel.
