credit card suggestion?

I've had good experiences with the GM MasterCard, was able to use an additional $3,000 of credits when I bought my GMC truck a couple years ago. My credits are back up to $3,000 again, don't need another truck yet.

I'm also using a Discover card that gives 1% cash back after meeting an initial amount. There are many, many others available.... I toss credit card offers in the trash (shredder) almost weekly.

We live on the east coast and are going to the west coast for most of our travels. With the gas prices the way they are...I figured that I'd try to get something back for the gas expenditures.

Pentagon Federal Credit Union offers a CC with 5% cash-back on fuel if you're active/retired military or DOD.

AMEX has a cash back card that provides 5% on fuel. One must meet their minimum ramp up but after that there is no limit to the rebate one can earn.

Be sure to read the fine print on some of the cards that offer rebates on fuel. Some only allow gasoline purchases and not diesel. Sometimes rebates depend on the primary definition of the seller, which may or may not be fuel. Sometimes the card only gives rebates on 'pay at the pump' purchases.

I use a Chase Rewards card that gives a 3% rebate on fuel purchases. The drawback on that one is that after $15 of rebates in one month, the rebate drops to 1%. At today's prices, $500 worth of purchases can happen in a week or less when you're on the road.

Shell Mastercard gives 5% back on gas purchases at Shell station and 1% at everything else. Also, AAA has a rebate card but, it's offers vary monthly, it seems.

I would like to suggest that you obtain two different credit cards. You carry one and your wife carry the other one.

Several years ago my wife and I were traveling and I got a phone call from my credit card company that my card had been compromised (never did figure out how) and it was being cancelled and a new one was being issued. We were on a tight schedule at that time and the company agreed to overnight me the new card. It didn't arrive so we were stuck without a card for the rest of the trip.

We now have two cards so if one does get compromised we have another one to fall back on.

I keep 6 cards in the safe in the M/H. You never know if you come across something you just got to have.

As mentioned earlier, Pentagon Federal Credit Union provides a number of services including 5% cash back on fuel purchases, 2% cash back on groceries, and 1.25% cash back on all purchases. It's a full-service credit union with amazing rates on auto loans, balance transfers, whatever...and NOT just for military/DOD. I joined PenFed as a sibling of an active military officer, but you can also join when linked to retired or former military, including Vietnam Veterans, Disabled American Veterans and the VFW. And if you go to the website at www.penfed.org, you will find other ways to join EVEN WITHOUT a direct military connection. In spite of what is printed on the website asking family member specifics, when I PHONED PenFed to join, I was not asked any specifics on my relative, not even his name. I simply declared that my brother is active military and was immediately accepted for membership. The offerings from PenFed greatly surpass most other credit unions, with extremely competitive rates for its many different services. I handle my business with it completely by phone and online, although it has offices located around the country. I love it!

We have a Citi Bank Driver's Edge Mastercard that gives 6% back on fuel, groceries, and drug store purchases for the first 12 months, and then drops down to 3%. All other purchases receive a 1% cash back reward.

After I retired it became very clear that the greatest reward on a credit card was paying the balance off each month. Saves a bunch of money.
