Tim, we have stayed at many WM's while going from one place to another, and never had any problems. We always check with the manager, and last year in Arkansas, Tennessee, and Texas there were security guards that knocked on our door and told us they would check on us during the night!
The only problem we encountered during our travels last year was at a CG in Georgia, where I caught a guy messing with my 50-amp shore power cord before 6 am. He said he needed a new one, and noticed the blue handle on mine, and wanted to take a closer look. It was locked to the pedestal, so he would have had to cut it off if that was his intention. We were leaving that morning, but I did inform the CG manager.
Crooks and weirdo's are everywhere nowadays, you just have to be vigilant and aware of your surroundings wherever you go. I agree with the other posters, if you ever feel unsafe, it is time to leave.
