Customizing a Trailer

I went to see some used fifth wheels with one of my friends who has no trailer experience. We just happened to be getting together for lunch anyway.

There are features my husband and I would enjoy having that are usually found in larger fivers. We only need sleeping quarters for ourselves. DH would like to have two recliners and a decent size TV. He likes the electric fireplaces but it is not crucial we have one of those.

Have any of you remodeled a fiver? Is it reasonably possible to take a used fiver and change out the furniture being careful of course to make provision for fastening the stuff for safe travel?

Are there businesses that can help you to rearrange the wiring or whatever is needed to have a nice entertainment center? My husband prefers to have two recliners facing the entertainment center.

Let us say that we find a smaller fiver that has the bedroom configuration and bathroom set up we like. Can we then change the rest of the space around to suit? We would likely leave the kitchen as it is as well.

Would any of you kind folks know of any forums where people discuss customizing their trailers in a modest way. We are not looking to spend a fortune.

You all have been so helpful. We have learned so much on these forums.

Please feel free to tell us that we are crazy to consider doing this if that is what you really think.

Someone built it, so can you. If you hunt around here you will find many remodelling and upgrading projects that have been carried out successfully. You can do it. Things need to be able to fit through the door or you'll have to remove a big window, tricky.

Some manufacturers will work with you and install or change/modify whatever your heart desires when you buy new, others will outright refuse any request for customization.
When you buy used, look at the bones (solid structure, no water issues, leaky roof, etc.) and make all the changes and improvements you want. The caveat is weight and space. You probably don't want to mess with the configuration since this would involve changes to the plumbing and electrical system, even simple add ons like a fireplace can overload the electrical system in some trailers. Keep in mind that a trailer is somewhat sensitive to weight imbalances, front to back and left to right and building materials are not only chosen based on cost but also weight.
Many RV owners make some changes after they buy but big remodeling jobs are usually not worth the trouble..
