Putting myself in the position of the LEO, I think I would feel as though I'm dealing with a real wise guy if he opened our conversation with "you're being recorded". I also doubt that any state laws require that a LEO be notified that they were being recorded during a traffic stop.

Rick
I totally agree. You will seldom win if you come off confrontational. If the LEO is out of line then perhaps you could then have some recourse with the Dashcam.

You expect an LEO to be professional and courteous. The LEO expects wants you to be calm and courteous.

Yes...it is a PIA to get stopped but it does no good to have a debate about all this stuff. That is what a court is for.

Yes...rules about video taping LEO's in action are changing so proceed with caution. OTOH, if your taping an LEO's activities causes problems (like you need to get into the middle of something for the "money shot") then I suspect obstruction charges will also have to be debated in court.

I'm not sure that I like the idea of asking an LEO if I have their permission to video and audio tape his actions. Besides, I would be looking at a subpoena for their records.

Personally, I want a dash cam to have fun and record things to show off to friends and remember some things. I would also use it for my own PERSONAL use to help me recall incidents if legal actions were possible. As an air traffic controller all radar and voice data was recorded and in the event of an incident I would just "go to the tapes" for any statements I made. It is kinda stupid to make a statement "on the record" after something that may have confused you occurs only to find you got it wrong. (Been there done THAT! ) Instead, go to the tape.

If it is legal to use in court and it supports my case...all the better. If illegal or doesn't help me...deep six. If I don't reveal I had it in the first place and it wasn't obvious (BTW, this is an important distinction regarding surreptitious recording.) then it is mine to do what I want with.

The best use of the camera would be to record traffic incidents and funny things.....U Tube is full of accidents and funny happenings. That meteorite in Russia earlier this year was recorded by a dash cam. But buying one to record Law Enforcement seems a bit paranoid.....If you think that there was no speed limit signs at the edge of the town...go back and record the route on your phone. If you find that you are recording numerous conversations with law enforcement.....think about why that would be......I have not in all my years been stopped by police and thought "Boy I wish I had recorded that conversation"

I wish I had one a few years ago. We were in heavy stop and go traffic and some guy decided to cut in front of me. We were not going that fast (25 mph) however with everyone slamming on their brakes and this guy taking my stopping spot, we exchanged paint. No one was sited but it could have easily went against me. I suppose the officer seen what I was driving, the traffic that was occurring and figured I was telling the truth but I could have been sited based on me hitting him. BTW his left rear fender was damaged and my right front bumper was scratched.

I agree. When detained by a LEO, basically you have no rights, until arrested; and if you are ticketed you were technically arrested when you were issued the ticket, whether you sign it or not.

I bought one to record video of my travel, not to catch cops being naughty. And when they pull you over and until they release you, you are in fact technically under arrest. When a LEO stops you, he/she has curtailed your freedom of movement. Having one to record crazy drivers would be the only other valid reason I could justify to my wallet.

Ha ha, smartypants

I wasn't planning on automotive hijinks in a 33' RV The camera would be more for self-preservation in the event of an accident / incident.

If cops can record you - you can record them. CBS newser Charles Osgood, back in the 1960's said, "just because you're not paranoid, doesn't mean they're not watching". How true that rings these days.

Late to the discussion but 1st Like the Steverino handle.

2nd A few years back in a shopping center this woman started honking ,flashing lights and screaming to pull over. She then starts on that at the stop sign I rolled back into her. 1st its a auto so not much chance of that besides I did not feel a impact. She then starts on about her husband is a lawyer and on and on. I started taking pics with my camera phone and she took off. Obvious scammer. I asked the cops what to do and they agreed she was going to try something but since she did not ask for money at that she had not committed fraud yet. BTW google russian dash cam, those folks are crazy
