DEF Brands

While in Walmart I saw that in addition to their usual Blue DEF brand they had another brand. The Blue DEF was priced at about $12/2.5 gal and the other brand was about $9/2.5 gal.

Is there really any difference between brands or are they all essentially the same? If so, that is a pretty good savings.

By law, it's supposed to be 32.5% solution of Urea in demineralized water since it can damage your system if it has impurities.

Now that doesn't mean that all containers contain that exact mixture, I've read reports of some jugs that were returned and resold to be discovered were just water. Make sure any jugs you buy have an unbroken seal under the cap.

As long as it meets your engine manufacturer's specification, buy it. ISO 22241

Just a heads up on buying DEF at Wal-Mart, with their no questions asked return policy, there have been instances where people have bought DEF at Wal-Mart, only to find that someone had returned it to the store after dumping it in their vehicle and then refilling the jug with water!

How did they know it was just water?

You can smell the difference right away as soon as you open the container. Urea has a very distinct smell. In at least 1 incident the person dumped it in his DEF tank and then had to have his whole system purged due to the tank being 1/2 full of water.

What brand of DEF are the truck stops selling out of the pumps for $2.79 a gallon? Answer....nobody seems to care and nobody seems to worry if it has been replaced with water.

Your vehicle will tell you. It will give you an error message and go into reduced power mode.

In one incident the jug was resealed with the original seal, they had reglued it back on, so sometimes a seal is no guarantee

Buy all your Def at the auto parts store because they don't take it back once you buy it.

If left in a sealed container, it has a minimum shelf life of a year. Don't know why you'd have to make a trip to the auto parts store if Walmart, fuel station, or Walgreens has sealed jugs of DEF.

Paranoia strikes deep, but you can be pretty confident that anything labeled DEF is Def. If you start to worry too much, how do you know the oil in the can is really 15w40? or the fuel in the pump is really unleaded gas or #2 diesel.

If you are afraid of the brand x stuff at Walmart, buy it at Tractor Supply Co or get it in bulk from Pilot/FlyingJ or other truck stop bulk pump.
