DEF Delete on Cummins ISL

Does anyone know of software you can buy to get rid of the DEF on an ECM? I had an engine warning light come on and when I run the code there was a 51% probability that it was the (Aftertreatment Diesel Exhaust Fluid Tank Temperature Sensor). Cummins said it was a Freightliner part and when I went to Freightliner they said I needed a part that was over $1,000. It was the entire float and DEF heater. So to avoid any further problems I don't want to be held hostage by my ECM programing. There must be a way to hack this thing so it won't shut down if something happens to the DEF.

How old is your MH.? There is a emissions warranty that might cover that part & labor.

If you are outta warranty, I’d search google and see what you can find there...it is highly illegal to “tamper” with emissions. That being said, I’d do a EGR/DPF delete, better mileage and MUCH better engine performance

So sorry for your troubles. These systems are relatively new and so expensive, that the future is scary. Like the DPF/DEF system is being called a $5,000 torpedo on Ford Diesel SuperDuty trucks.

If you delete the system, please ensure there is no testing in your future. Removing any bits is prohibited for on the road vehicles

You would need to trick the ECM...that could be mock senders or a new flash of the ECM. Both would be aftermarket and not coming from really prime sellers.

Best luck

Modifying emissions like that is totally against the law. If you want an example, take a look at Volkswagen! And I disagree that DEF systems are new. They started in the 2007 or 2008 models IIRC, and they were standard beginning in 2011 or so for most vehicles.

Make sure you take off any mufflers as well. Nothing says macho like loud pipes and black exhaust.

No one is arguing the legality of modifications and thank you for the dates.
All I knew was that many changes were driven by the 2010 gov't standards.

But, I submit that these dates were not very long ago, especially in the scheme of a Diesel engine's expected lifespan. And, considering gasoline engines had EGR in the 1960's and catalytic converters in the 1970's, 10 years is not long ago.

As a life-long "gearhead" I knew these DPF/DPF failures where coming when I read the first article I ever saw about the concept in Popular Mechanics about 15 years ago. After all, it is a toxic waste furnace running most all the time the engine is running.

For this reason, I will rebuild the good ol' Cummins 5.9 in our 2003 Dodge3500 before I would ever get into one with this "equipment."

Safe travels

Turbo diesel register will have answers. I used to do some deisel racing and was deep into Cummins. Even had some of their engineers help is from time to time. Such as twin turbos with propane and nitros both on a 12 valve!
A friend of mine had the delete done on his 2013 3500 and picked up 6 mpg with no other performance mods except AFE air filter.

DEF came to Dodge Ram Cummins in 2015. The first tank lasted for 6200 miles in my new 3500 RAM, the second tank was about 5000 and less than 2000 on 3rd tank and falling. The dealership has checked it out several times stating the system is “in specs”. Another “NO VALUE ADDED” mandated rule bye EPA. I just read that Our President has rescinded a bunch of unachievable (in my semi trained opinion) CAFE standards that may make it legal for us to accomplish DEF delete. The good news is our 2009 Newmar with 11.0 Cummins does not have DEF!!!!!

Yes! Deleting is quite common.

Search Cummins forums not related to RVs and you will get a ton of information.

We had a very similar warnings and codes issue. Something like 88 codes/warnings with it in 400 miles. Turns out that two of the pins in the wiring harness (and there are a bunch of them!) had not been completely seated or had worked loose and were touching, which generated the faults. Each time it touched it restarted the counter/system/whatever so it never put me into limp mode. The technician worked very diligently to find them, thank goodness. My visit to freightliner for this was covered under warranty.

I have a Cat C7 in my 2009 and I don’t use DEF either but I do have a DPF though ( you probably have one as well). So far everything has operated as it should.
