Delamination Or Adhesive Failure - Is it time to run away?

Hey all you Winnebago Lovers out there...

I was looking to purchase a 2009 Sightseer 37L (that floorplan really appeals to me) but the inspection identified either delamination and/or adhesive failure in two areas. One area is just below the passenger side window and the other is on one of the slides.

Normally, the simple utterance of the word "delamination" makes my skin crawl. (Have had to completely dismantle the back end of my trailer because of this). But when that word is uttered about a coach I am thinking of buying, well my first thought is to run away as fast as I can.

However, other than this, the coach is in pretty good shape. So, I have taken a pause to gather more intel. Since Winnebago has had problems with their glue not adhering, these spots could be due to that instead of delamination caused by water intrusion.

A member of this group asked if a moisture detector was used in the inspection and I don't believe one was. I will need to double check on that.

In the meantime, I am posting a couple of photos to see if anyone here would have 1. input on the photos (I know one is not very clear) as to what the potential problem might be and/or 2. provide me with some information on what they know about adhesive failures.

The sales person tells me that while Winnebago is certainly aware of this problem, they have not addressed it with any of their coaches (in a recall type of way) as they consider it cosmetic and therefore, not a safety issue. She told me that they often purchase coaches with this issue as it has not prevented them from selling them.

Not knowing the history of the coach or having photos that would indicate when this might have first manifested, I have no way of ascertaining if the problem areas could spread or if new areas could suddenly appear.

So, I am turning to this group of knowledgeable Winnebago owners to hopefully provide me with some of their sage wisdom.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Best to you all, Terry

I'll say that I had TT with delamination issues. Wasn't much at first then one day it took off like a plague. I'll never own a TT again with that kind of siding.

Sorry in advance for splitting out 2 sections of your post but thought it would be easier that way.

First impressions are usually more often correct than not, the mind games we can play to justify going against our instincts is to me amazing.

If you have had a previous bad experience with something at least similar to this do you really want to do it again?

You quote a salesperson. Their job is to sell what they have at the best price they can get. They don't care what happens after that on a known issue.

With that in mind just think a moment - the reason why you are considering purchasing a defective rig is most likely the price. What makes you think the lamination problem won't get worse. What kind of price will you get in the future for a defective rig with yet another owner and older than it is right now.

Yes the salesperson is most likely correct - they can sell anything to an unsuspecting buyer or for the right price.

If they want to take $20000 off their asking price I might think about but not sure if I would even go for it then. It is like cancer just keeps growing until you cut it out.

Most people post their questions in only one of the forums.

Really no need to post questions on two different iRV2 forums. It gets confusing and might dilute your response pool.

Good luck finding the correct answer!

Unless they are paying you to take the coach, run fast. I am dealing with the same thing on my 99' Winnie and it is a headache and lots of work. Will not buy another coach with this problem.

The ones that had issues with delamination. Was it from water or glue failure?

Unfortunately, the problem(s) isn't going to heal on its own and will, over time, probably get worse. Every time you look at your new toy, your focus will be on those 2 areas. If it were me, I'd move on down the road.

Hi Charlie...yeah it can be a real nightmare. My delamination was caused by water intrusion. Started around the bedroom window. Me and my son tackled the problem and thought we had it licked only to discover the rot had just kept spreading. I have pretty much torn it all apart. Its new life will be as a tiny home. When I have the time.

I'm so sorry you suffered from a similar nightmare.

Wise words NY....Yeah, I have to set aside all of the reasons I want to have this particular MH because those thoughts are emotion based not logic based.

Why purchase something with a known issue that is not an easy minor fix. This problem could consume the coach. Then where would I be....I will tell you where...stuck in misery. The reason I want to buy a MH is not to be miserable! I know these things have problems and they aren't usually cheap to fix. But why start out with one that has a big problem.

Thanks for helping me get my head on straight.

Oh jeez grumpy....is that why you use that name? I would have to change my name to grumpywoman if I had to tackle another huge problem like delamination again....I'm running!

Neub, they are not willing to drop the price and you know what? I'm kind of glad they aren't. It would just mess with my head if they did. This way it is a much easier decision to walk away.
Thanks, Terry

Thanks Brex...I'm sure you are quite correct about that. I hope I did not create any confusion.

I wanted to post within the Winnebago group as I thought this particular problem might be related to the manufacturer.

But I accidentally posted under the main group and did not know how to delete it. I have not learned all the ins and outs of navigation yet. My apologies.
