Disengage steer wheel lock

We just got a new 2017 Chevy Silverado and need to unlock the steering wheel to tow......anyone know how to do that? I understand this could affect our warranty, but I guess my husband doesn't care!

On most vehicles all you have to do to unlock the steering column is to put the ignition switch in the acc position. What does your manual say to do?

Disengage steering continued...

He is looking for a permanent disengage...he's worried with it in acc if the pickup were to get bounced around while towing, it might slip out of acc...???

I suppose anything is possible But, I have never heard of that happening. I have flat towed a jeep across every kind of terrain for 60,000+ miles and never had any issue evenremoely close to that. I would be far more concerned with potential liability for disabling a manufacturers safety device than the truck turning its key off by hitting a bump.

Question, is the truck 2 or 4 wheel drive? If it's 2 wheel drive is it automatic or manual shift? Last I looked the chevy truck automatic cannot be towed 4 wheel down unless it's a 4 wheel drive with neutral tow mode. Two wheel manual trans just install a switched fuse in the ignition, put it in acc mode and go.

I've been known to be wrong before, but, that's how my old Tahoe 4x4 operated.

It may not have a steering wheel lock, my 2007 4 wheel does not and has been towed close to 80,000 miles, with the key in my pocket. I am not sure about a 2017 but Chevy and GMC automatic pickups did not have a lock for many years. I don't think the truck manual addresses this though. I was told by a friend who was also towing one.

Check by turning it off and turning the wheel, it turns hard but can be moved, if locked it will not move at all.

Four wheel drive can be towed 4 down by shifting the transfer case to neutral. With engine running put trans in neutral and hold the control knob all the way to the right for about ten seconds. Indicator light should go to the neutral position. Check by putting the transmission in drive and reverse. Then put transmission in park and tow. To put the transfer case back in gear start the truck and put transmission in neutral and turn the knob to two wheel drive. You will hear and feel the transfer case shift back in. This should be covered in the truck manual under towing section.

On most car now days, you will need to make sure you can tow 4 down. The transmission needs to have some way to have the oil pump, pump oil while the wheels turn. Which means really, if you don't have a 4x4 with a neutral mode you will not be able to tow it with all 4 wheels on the ground.
