Do I need a surge guard??

I'm new to RVing and need the advice of wise, experienced RV people. Should I invest in a $525.00 power surge guard? Seems a bit expensive...but it does remove bad power and low/high voltage. What do you use prior to power hook up?
Any advice for me?? FYI...my rig is a 2000 Monaco La Palma 34ft on a Ford F53 (v10).

You only need one if you don't want your electrical equipment zapped. Look me up in the treads - I lost 2 TVs, Microwave and the inverter/charger.

Yes, you do. Protection may seem expensive, but repairs that WILL HAPPEN w/o protection are much more so.

What do you use prior to power hook up?

I have a hard wired TRC SurgeGuard that checks & monitors for a number of possible problems, and cuts power if something starts going wrong. I also carry a digital multimeter that I use often before hooking up, and for diagnosing when a problem occurs.

That is the one I have. Just don't leave it in bypass mode, I should know.

Yes! It is the first thing we did after purchasing our used MH. We went with the progressive one for a 50 Amp service. Total cost including installation was approx. $400. If you don't want it permanently installed they also have a portable one as well. Don't take a chance.

When we first stayed at a campground, I tested all the connections on the 50 amp service and everything checked out OK. I connected and about 3 hours later no power because the progressive unit was kicking off with warning codes. The manager from the campground came over and found out it was a bad circuit breaker on the pedistal and replaced. Not sure if any damage would have occurred to the MH but was so glad I had surge system installed. Spend the extra money. Best of luck.

Yes. I use and recommend Progressive Industries EMS. Not the just surge protectors, rather the full protection EMS units.

I highly recommend the Progressive Industries HW-50C (hardwired) for all the reasons given above!

X-2! My coach came with a hard wired 50 amp surge and EMS. I also went with the mobile Progressive unit that digitally reads the pedestal prior to hook up. You just can't be safe enough. Cost roughly $350.00 depends where you purchase!

My best analogy is do you need insurance, no not unless something happens same thing.
