Do I need to weigh?
We're new at this and have our first RV, a Coachmen Leprechaun Class C. Is it necessary to take the vehicle to the scale and get a weight slip? We live in Texas.

It can certainly be helpful to know if your load is balanced and that your are not overloading either of your axles. It also lets you make sure your tires are filled to the correct pressure.

If you're going to have it weighed make sure that you have most of your gear on it so you will know what the true weight is on the road.

Weighing allows you to properly adjust your tire pressure for your load. While at North Ranch in Congress AZ, I had each corner weighed plus they measured my coach height. I had my total weight and height engraved on a small sign which I posted on my dash in English and Metric to refer to when I approach an under pass and bridge.

Yes, get it weighed and then use the Load Inflation chart from your tire manuf's website to get the proper psi.
Also, search Tireman9's posts. I missed this in my search on the forum and could have saved time for me and not wasted the time of the kind folks who did respond.

I would load your RV with everything you normally carry including fuel and water. Would then have all four "corners" weighed to be sure you aren't overloaded on one. I see portable outfits at rv rallies and shows. Usually in the $60 range.

It is not required by law. That is for commercial vehicles only.

not required by law? no, just a safety issue to prevent one or more corners from being over loaded which could lead to tire failures, poor handling, even a ticket.
I have said it before, is you family worth the effort?

Not advocating not weighing just giving another piece of information that had not been covered.

This may be considered RV blasphemy but no. Is it best practices? Yes. A lot depends on how much "stuff" you plan to put in your motorhome versus how much it is designed to hold. If you plan to travel with everything you could possibly ever need, full fresh water tank, and pull a "Lucy" ( load up on souvenir rocks ) then no amount of weighing will help you.
But, if you travel lightly set the weights to what the manufacturer says on the placard in the coach or using the GAWR's and the tire manufacturers chart and go have fun. If you think the ride is too harsh or you get concerned that you may have too much stuff then by all means go get it weighed.

Hi Bill & Gina! Welcome to IRV2! We're sure glad you joined the gang!
Congrats on the new rig! I highly recommend that you get the rig weighed. That's the only way you can properly air the tires! Once you have the weights of front and rear axles, go to the tire manufacturer's website and use their weight charts to determine the proper pressure for the tires. I would add 5 PSI to their recommended pressures. Keep her between the ditches!
Good luck, happy trails, and God bless!

Four corner weights are best but hardest to get. Front and rear axle weights are very easy at any CAT scale, cost around $12 and can be done in seconds. Not having an idea what you way can lead to all kinds of problems on the road. especially with tires and handling.
I've seen class c's that are overweight when you put the family in them and leave all their junk at the house.
