Do trains bother you in campgrounds?

If trains bother you then don't go to the KOA in Wisconsin Dells. The train tracks are so close they shake the ground and run ever hour.

Just to add to the list Hershey Highmeadows RV section is farthest from tracks but they still rattle your china and Seligman/Rt.66 they give you a key chain that says "night of a thousand trains"? And of course Virginia Beach we have pictures of the rivets on the fighter jets going over the campground! But loved every second! Actually grandkids said they didn't hear anything over my snoring!!!

A long time ago, perhaps 15 years in the dim past, the DW and I were RVing in western Canada. We took the ferry from Vancouver to Vancouver Island heading to Victoria. It was night when we docked and we looked up a campground, any campground, and were pleased to find a provincial park not too far away located among the hills/mountains of that area. We turned in, too tired to look around, and the trains found us. Now, hearing trains at a campground is not that unusual but here they pulled a trick novel to us. They circled the campground as they negotiated the mountains and actually approached and departed in the same direction, or as near as we could tell. We puzzled over their route for a time but fatigue won after the night was near past.

From time to time, we camp in a wonderful campground in the Sierra Mountains, only about an hour and 15 minutes from home. The Union Pacific Mainline is nearby, with a least one train rumbling past at about 4:00 a.m every morning. Sure, it can wake us up.

BUT.....the noise that is much more disturbing is that caused by the bear(s) ocassionally coming in about 2:00 a.m., turning over the 500# locked garbage dumpsters like plastic playhouses. Have not seen the bear(s)....and don't care to. But the couple times I have seen those upset dumpsters on my 7:00 a.m. walk to the "library", I quickly changed my mind and returned to our coach....with eyes moving quickly in all 360 degrees and hoping he/she/they were long gone! I just don't worry too much anymore about the trains. In spite of the dumpster "parties" held every so often by the big furry guys, we come back when we can and enjoy the absolute beauty of the Sierra's....trains, bears et all. We love the place!

YES!!!! Just stayed at a campground in Zanesville, OH on Mother's Day Weekend. Friday I probably got 2 hours of sleep...heard the train all night long. By Saturday night about 9 I was exhausted!!! Which sucked, because it was actually a nice, dry night! Ohio has been so wet...almost daily rain! All I wanted to do was sit by the fire and have a few beers!

BTW - slept like a baby Saturday night! Didn't hear a dang thing!

My dad worked for the Rock Island Lines 30 years and retired the month they went bankrupt.

We lived a half mile from the mainline track. The night train went by at 3 AM regular as clock work. One night, I woke up at 3 AM wondering "what's wrong". I didn't figure it out until the train came by about an hour later.

Lots of memories for me. Dad would take me to work on the night shift and I rode the switch engines until daylight.

You just can't please an 8-12 year old kid any better than that.

In defense of railroaders i have to say it is not their fault the Federal Railroad Administration mandates when , how far and how long the whistle must blow. after being in the cab of a diesel locomotive for 35 years and hearing that whistle at every road crosing i agree it can be annoying. my audiologist says if my eye sight was as bad as my hearing i would require a white cane. Ha-Ha curently in green river utah koa next to thr tracks.

Grew up North of Richmond VA. Our property was bordered on one side by the Chickahominy River and the RF&P RR on the other. So trains have never bothered me. When I left home, the absence of trains kept me awake as did the traffic noise.

Heck, I can do you all one better when it comes to NOT being bothered by trains.

Some years ago (Say 20) Norfolk and Southern had 2 and then 3 genuine STEAM engines on the main lines. One presidential canidate had one of them re-painted for his Whistle stop tour. 1218, 611 were the first two as I recall, and a Mighty Mike was the 3rd.. 1218 was an "Old black man" Freight engine, 611 a passanger liner capable of over 100 MPH n good tracks.. I never got to see her.

But I rode behind the other two.. We Ham Radio operators worked communications for the event.. (Vintage engint, vintage cars, all historic hardware for the most part) Let's say someone in "MY" (my Assigned) car got a cinder in his eye (Which happened) I pick up the mic and call Net Control, who contacts the operator who runs with the on-board medic, who comes and does something about it (There is a story ther but not tonight) We run out of water, Need motion sickness pills, whatever,, I radio NCS who contacts the proper escort operator. So I got to ride for free.

I fell asleep on the way home (Car host was instructed to wake me if needed or if my call heard)

I'm tempted to say, "Nope! Never had a train bother me IN a campground before... 'would be mighty surprised to see one leave the tracks and amble over to my rig, for sure!"

one of our favorite places has a few tracks that merge and they come at all hrs.
we don't mid em, but our recently departed companion dallas (Rottweiler) would get up and HOWL as it rumbled by. it was sure funny

These are why i blow the horn at all crossings. Once you hit an 18 wheeler with 9 new crew cab trucks.

I forgot to mention, After I moved off the farm (5 miles from the tracks and on a clear day you could clearly hear th trains) I moved to the city, like 4 blocks from the Train depot.
