When we stop at rest areas, truck stops or any place that is not a campground it is not to save a fee it is because it is usually late at nite and/or we need to pull out early and just don't want to spend the time to find a campground for just a few hours and make the other campers mad about pulling in so late or pulling out so early.

I'm amazed at all these people who are touting the economic advantages of staying at state parks. That may be true if you aren't interested in full-hookup sites, but try staying in a WA State park with FHU for less than ~$35-38/night and that doesn't include the reservation fee if you make one in advance. Texas parks make matters worse by charging you the per-person day use fee on top of the camping fee unless you have an annual pass. Quite a few other states are just as expensive; I named these just as examples.

Don't get me wrong, we like state parks but they aren't necessarily any cheaper for equivalent full hookup sites than many commercial parks. We typically pay $35-40/night before tax for a FHU site in the US. This has crept up from the $30-35 it was when we started full-timing a few years ago. These ranges include the usual 10% Good Sam discount at many parks but we don't bother with PA anymore since it's parks are not often where we are and are often a bit on the "tired" side. We don't look for fancy "resorts", just reasonably clean, reasonably attractive and maybe even a little space, if possible.

But at least for the Wa state parks I have stayed in I get privacy vs an rv park. Worth it. OR state parks are $28 for water and electric.

If you really want sticker shock on a nightly fee for a campsite, back when we still made monthly payment on the coach, for a true cost-per-night average (not including gas/food which would be part of a car trip/hotel stay anyway), we'd keep track of all the campsite fees for the year. To that, we'd add what we paid the bank all year for the coach loan. Then divide that total by the number of nights we spent RV-ing. Believe me, THAT comes to a LOT $$$ per night for a campsite.

Kind of like staying at a fancy Vegas hotel/casino and walking 2 miles to save 2 bucks on a cheaper buffet. Silly-lol!
