Hello, I am in the process of buying a motorhome, and the dealer is eager to sell me a 'paint protection package' called Perma-Plate. Way too expensive, I know, but the claim is that with this applied, I don't need to ever wax the unit. That might be worth it in the long run.

Has anyone any experiance with this product? Can you really do without waxing if you have it applied?

We opted not to get the "super wax" job on our '04 MH. It has full bodypaint and clear coat, plus the celephane tape (MMM) on the front. I think if you have the clear coat, there is no need to get the super wax job. They put this type of stuff on new cars as a way to increase the dealer profit. On our '99 MH we did not have the clear coat ( I think), but we had aluminum sides and roof (smooth) and I did put some liquid wax on it a couple of times and kept it under a semi-shelter. When we traded it 5 years later ( 33,000 miles) , it still shined. Of course, its just my opinion that the super wax job is not worth the money. s/Toby

I have paint with gel coat and the whatever you want to call the design, it's painted on not tape. I did get the PermaPlate and I'm one that has always waxed my vehicles, boats, etc. It has made a a lot easier. About every six months I use the polish they supply as a restorer and it looks as good as it did the day I bought it. I like it. I still get comments when I'm in camps asking if my MH is new. That to me tells the story. Got to there websit and check it out. I have not waxed mine since I've had it applied. But, I use the polish restorer as I said earlier that they supply. Mine sits in the sun when stored along my home. I do wash it regularly.

The Super wax is probably just a polymer. The restorer is exactly the same chemical as the first coat, and you are basically just applying the wax again. If the cost is under about $5 a foot, it ight be cheaper to have them apply the wax. It gives you a good base to start off for the exterior maintenance of the motorhome.

Well I have no reason not to believe you. So it seems that I paid way too much if that is the case. But I still like the finish and I would wax it over again regardless as I like it when it is clean. So you are saying the retorer is the same as the base they put on and all I'm doing is doing the same?

That is basically what I am saying. HOwever, if you like your results and are satisfied with the process, I would consider you lucky and say go for it. It is probably a polymer sealant and so they feel it is better than a more natural product like wax. It performs the same function but has a different name.
