Don't tell Sleep Number!

Just a warning for Sleep Number bed owners! If you ever open the controller for ANY reason, DON'T EVER LET THEM KNOW! We moved our bed from the 5er to the MH. I drilled holes in each side of the bed base to bring the cables from the pump under the bed out to the controllers. I opened the controllers and unplugged the cables from the circuit board to bring them through the holes, a very simple process that anyone could do without any risk of damaging the control. When I opened the controllers the LCD display plate fell out and I wasn't sure which of two ways it was supposed to go. I called Select Comfort tech support to ask them this very simple question, one that should have taken them a total of 30 seconds to answer. To my total shock, the lady not only could not answer my question, but immediately told me that because I had opened the controls MY WARRANTY WAS CANCELLED! I argued with her for some time and even talked with a supervisor but didn't get anywhere with them! There was no warning on the controls that opening them would void the warranty!

I love my Sleep Number beds (we have two of them), but that's a rotten policy to have without a warning sticker on the controls!

Never ever call them and tell them your name. If, by some reason, I cant find it by google, I call and tell them that I have an 'old one, no longer under warranty'.

I have the same type of LCD 'glass' on my Audi and also said 'oops' when it fell out before I could see the orientation.. After futzing for awhile, I just put it in and it worked.. I do believe that they work either way.

Probably does not matter much, anyway. Sleep Number does not use the wired controllers any longer and, when they quit working (and they likely will), you have to replace the pump and controllers with wireless. Under warranty, the cost is prorated, but still 3 figures.

Not sure, but I don't think a warranty is truly void unless it can be proven that whatever was done actually caused the failure. I am not a lawyer though.

I believe the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act prevents voiding warranties solely on the basis of tampering. A warranty may be dishonored only if the tampering actually affected the part that has failed, and could have caused the failure. In order to obtain an exception to this rule the manufacturer has to clearly state that the warranty is voided by tampering and should provide tamper-resistant seals on the device to serve as evidence of tampering. This should not be a state-to-state issue because the Act is federal law.

I have a 15 year old select comfort mattress and they replaced my airpump once already at no charge when the first one burned out. Before I would spend 3 figures on a new pump, I'll hook a bicycle pump up to it. I love mine, too, but no way I'd give them that kinda dough when there are other options.

And FYI.. If you travel up into the mountains. The higher you go the firmer the bed gets. There may be some danger of damage if you lay down on an already overfilled mattress.

Yup we had to replace our controller AND our bladders this fall. Both crapped out and although they were still under warranty, as jzick mentioned it's a pro-rated $$ so still cost us several hundred dollars to repair. And we were left without a bed to sleep on for a week while we waited for the new parts to arrive (thank goodness for our foam mattress topper). Seems very, very common that the controller breaks. Ours was only 3 years old.

Personally not a fan of sleep number...neither the bed nor the customer service.

Yep, you just have to be careful when separating the two halves of the case and removing the circuit board or the display will fall out. Looking at the controller for the other bed solved the problem.

When I call in on things like that, I give them my neighbors name.

so now! after reading about all the problems i don't think a sleep number bed is for this old DOG
