Draining the grey tank...

When I dump the grey, I start slow and eventually have the valve fully open... it gushes full flow for a little while then slows and almost stops...

Then suddenly gushes full flow for another second or two...

This is my 3rd Motorhome, and the first time I've ever seen this phenomenon...

Could I have a problem???

Vent is partly or completely blocked.

Mine does similar things with gray. I think it comes out so fast that it causes a back up or vapor type of lock. I just open valve half way at first and when it starts to slow I open it up all the way, no problems.

Our MH has the same issue.

I thought it was plugged because we had water backing up into to shower last year. Finally it went through this draining, stopping, and draining then it worked fine the rest of last season.

Took it out this year and noticed the draining, stopping and draining again. But it didn't back up in the shower.

I assume these holding tanks have vent pipes. Maybe that is being restricted somehow. Just had that thought. Maybe I'll go check.

Looking forward to more thoughts.

Definitely sounds like restricted vent. Like pouring a full gallon jug of water out only bigger, glug, glug, glug.

Don't all the drains that drain into the gray tank act as a vent system? None of them are shut off from the tank. It seems all would have to have blockage to block venting.

If the drains are equipped with an inline trap, they would not vent the tank.

I have seen similar to some extend occationally on multiple motorhomes I've had. I think maybe the water at times can come out faster than vent can vent air in. I've never worried about it.

HAVE seen the same. Would bet the vent pipe is pushed too deep into the gray tank or not in the high end.
