dry rot

has anybody had problems with excessive signs of dry rot on their tires? i have michelins ltx-m/s that are showing this problem. we are full time on the tires that rvers and the tires were made in aug.of 09. all of the tires(4) that i can see have this sign. i've e-mailed michelin but no luck so far with a responce. i,ve also talked to our dealer said your sol.,but said tires should not show this problem this soon? the signs are completly around the face of the tires not just by the tread. any ideas? it would seem that with only 14,700 miles on them that a warranty would exist? thanks ya'll

If they are less than 5 years old as you say call Michelin customer service to find a factory service center to inspect the tire sidewalls. They will most likely replace with a pro-rate on tire depth remaining. They did mine three years ago. make sure they have proper air pressure.

What are the symptoms? Tiny surface cracks? These may or may not be serious, based primarily on the depth of the cracks and an inspection of the inside of the tire for similar cracking. RV tires from August '09 will be covered by warranty if Michelin agrees the problem is a defect.

Find a different dealer. They should be helping you get a Michelin rep to evaluate your tires - unless perhaps they have already concluded that what you are calling "dry rot" is merely cosmetic and that you have no warranty claim.

Call--the old fashion way---much more effective than e-mail in solving a problem, If the person on the phone cannot or will not solve the problem (at least arrange an inspection) then ask to speak to their supervisor. I think you will at least get a response.

Be pleasant but determined.

The OP is SOL like the dealer told him.

Michelin RV Tire Warranty has 0 Days coverage for cracks or dry rot.
Good Year does have a 7 year warranty on cracks.

Hi Plumberfrank
Just a few questions about your tires.
Can I assume you bought your RV new?
Have you heard if Michelin dealers are aware of the dry rot issue and are instructed to warranty the tires if the owners demand replacement tires?
And do you know what the difference is between your old tires and the new ones?
( why did they discontinue the ones you had?) Thanks Pat

hi pat, yeah we bought new. we had about 800 miles on it. no, i don't believe the dealers know that a dry rot problem exists. i believe the only reason i had to go thru michelin was these were the tires on the rv. otherwise i would have had to go thru the dealer. like many products they are periodically upgraded. but no i don't know what the difference is.that would be a good to start.

Thanks for the information. I will be watching my tires for any signs of dry rot.
These tires are on lots of class c rv as well as other trucks. Will be interested in hearing from others. Can you give us a report on the new tires?
