DVT & RV'ing
So the wife and I just returned home from a two month road trip in the RV. I am one of those people that just get in and drive forever without much stopping. Shortly after our return I was taken by ambulance to the emergency room for multiple scans & test, more than I could ever imagine. I honestly thought my lights were going our for good, especially when I heard the EMT's calling for flight for life. First they thought it was a stroke, come to find out it was a blood clot in the thigh, otherwise known as DVT. And it is life threating if not taken care of. So, no travel for 6 months, maybe meds forever, that is yet to be confirmed.
When we are able to travel again I will be making stops very often, aprx. every 2 hours and getting out of the seat. Taking a walk and some leg stretches. If you have never had this it is very serious and not to be taken lightly.
Just thought I would pass this along and maybe prevent it in someone else.
Safe travels.

Glad to hear you caught it in time and will hopefully be okay! I used to be like you were, but anymore we stop about every 1.5-2.0 hours at the most and walk. I don’t think there are any rest areas we haven’t stopped at between JAX and NM on I-10. LOL

I found it helps having a pet with you. Both of you get a break every two hours. The older we get the more important it is too take a break! Fool luck and hang in there!

Really good advise for almost everyone here. It only takes a minute to pull off somewhere safe and walk around stretch and check the rig. I have had both knees replaced and I need to pull over myself and not try to power through. Its a rv so whats the hurry anyway?

Yep, been down the DVT road before. Used to drive 10-12 hours with few breaks. A couple of ER trips convinced me that this was a bad practice.
I do take blood thinners now, but other than bruising and bleeding easily, it's no big deal. I like to stop every two hours for a potty break anyway, so I walk to the restroom in the rest area instead of using the onboard facilities.
My last DVT was in about '05, and I started driving the coach in '12. I have had no problems with the current plan.

Something my Doctor told me when I told him I was headed south for hte winter.. FREQUENT REST STOPS
Now I travel on the Diabetic travel plan..
(What is the Diabetic Travel plan... DO NOT, under any conditions save 2, pass a rest area.. Stop. Walk, Go sit a spell on that special "Throne")
THe two conditions..
1: Just cleared a rest stop at a Truck Stop
2: Next exit is a planned truck stop.

Compression socks are also recommended to help prevent DVT when driving or flying.

I am going to show this to my pilot who seems to think the trip is about getting to the next destination and not stopping to appreciate what lies between campgrounds. Maybe this is a good time to slow down a bit.

Drink Drink Drink
And not alcohol or coffee (sorry!) Both are dehydrating.
Adequate hydration is essential. Plus - it will force you to stop frequently!
Movement and water are very important.
This from a Physical Therapist and Registered Nurse.

my legs are in terrible condition from 4 million miles driving a tractor trailer . And I never stopped enroute . Would try to grab what I needed ( head call , a meal , etc,,) near a pick up or delivery . Saved time , and as I was getting paid by the mile most of the time , time was money . Been every where , saw mostly nothing . 5ver will change that . Dogs get to air ( potty break ) , and so do I every 4 hours at the most , more like 3 hours in between stops .
and FWIW , hauling HAZMAT , we were required to stop for a safety check every 2 hours . That law changed and is no longer required . The safety check is a great thing for the RV world .Walk around the unit , kick the tires ( they get soft before going flat ( hard to believe ) ,check all hoses and cords etc . Before you know it , you shook off the road burn , stretched those legs , and head out safely

Hello,
When traveling, whichever one of us is driving, does not get this but we change driver at each stop to give the other one a break.
The passenger can get up and walk to the back of the rig, take a potty break, and lay on the bed and do leg stretches or exercises. Need to be sure on your feet for this because of the movement of the rig. Also not in a seatbelt so this needs to be taken into consideration.
When we stop for a break, lunch, or to change the driver, we take a walk around the area.
I have had numerous people say that once you retire you slow down because you do not have to be back to work on Monday. I will find this out in January, 58 more days in fact.
With both of us driving, we can travel a lot farther in a day if we want to. If we want to being the option. When we do stop we also check tires all around, clean windshield if necessary, and just look the vehicles over.
DVT's are very serious! You don't want to go there if you can avoid it by stopping and taking a break.
