Left Florida a month ago. We are now in Alexandria Bay, NY, and in a few days will be heading to Canada for our first ever MH trip there. The areas we would like to see are Montreal, Quebec City, then on towards PEI and Nova Scotia. What is the best place for currency exchange, and is it best to use credit cards or cash? Do you all have campgrounds that you've found to be nice? We are in a 37 foot MH and prefer full hookups or minimally electric and water. Unique places/things to see? Also, I'm unsure of my cell phone service and internet (Verizon) in Canada? Lots of questions - hope someone can help?

We changed some money before we left because our CU had one of the best rates around, but you have to order the foreign currency because they don't keep it on hand at every branch. We also used our debit card and get cash advances at ATMs. That exchange rate is pretty good too.

It has been my experience that ATMs are the cheapest way to go. Now this could depend on your bank, but in my case it was by far the best option. I would stay away from CC use unless you have one that does not charge foreign transaction fees. The most expensive way is to use a human teller in a Canadian bank.

We have been in Nova Scotia for the last 2 weeks, didn't bring any Canadian currency with us. No problem use Visa credit card, give you the exchange rate.

I agree to using your credit card, you hardly need cash anywhere. If you do use an ATM, make sure it's not one of those small ones in a gas station or convenience store. Their fees are ridiculous. Use a real bank (RBC, BMO, TD)
Fuel comes to 35-40% more expensive here so be sure to fill up before crossing the border.
Do yourself a favour and DO NOT take your rig onto the island that is Montreal! It's a construction/detour NIGHTMARE!!!
Don't forget to try "poutine"! The best is just off Autoroute 20, Exit 170, at a place called Lemaire. It's also big-rig friendly!

For a couple hundred bucks, virtually anywhere will work. The last two times we went, Vias and Master Cards worked everywhere and were used almost exclusively which means that I still had (have!!) some CAD left over. My Discover Card was useless. AMEX may be fine as well - they worked on business trips but I gave up on them years back as too costly for my use.

Verizon does have a Trip Planner to help set up Canadian use of your phone.

Also- Our Vet provided an International health Certificate for our dogs going to Canada. Normally only proof of vaccinations is required, but if pets are flown home, left in country, or return unaccompanied the International Certificate may be required.
