Eclipse
With the eclipse coming on the 21st, I have read that many parks in the path are sold out. I am curious what you think the crowds and traffic will look like. I really don't need a place to stay, but if I decide to head up to say, North of Ketchum, ID, is it going to be major traffic jam on the roads? What about just heading North of Idaho Falls on I-15 and just pulling off at a rest area? You think people will be camping out early?
I'm just trying to get an idea whether it will be a circus.
Thanks,
J

I Summer in a Town of 3,000 and we're expecting 10's of thousands as we're dead center of the path.

Pure speculation on my part but I wouldn't plan on the rest area idea. About 1,000 of your closest friends have already thought of that and you can bet the police have too. If you're thinking camp grounds with amenities, you're probably already too late. That leaves family and friends in the path or boondocking on public lands in the path. Good luck!
We'll be just outside the path in the American Falls Idaho area.

Madras, OR has dry camping at a giant farm field right in the path of the eclipse. Porta potties, showers, water and septic trucks available. $300 per site for five nights. If they sell out, they will add more camping with another farm field. I bought my spot. I plan to be there Friday night.

If you go, plan on all the local services being overwhelmed (grocery stores and gas stations sold out, ...) I have reservations (electric hook up only) at a hunting camp outside Douglas WY, on the centerline, we are paying about $100 per night for 3 nights, arriving on the Saturday before the eclipse and departing the day after it. I made my reservations back in January and had to search through numerous places from the Mississippi river westward to find anyone with any kind of RV hookups. Where I am going has 10 or 12 full hookup sites, which were long gone when I booked my spot, water and sewer are limited there because of septic system and water well. My plan is to top up on fuel, early and often, restock groceries on the Friday and Saturday before the eclipse.
I know what it is like to live in a relatively small town (10,000 people) and have the local services overwhelmed as I live along a hurricane evacuation route about 100 miles inland, and every time there is a hurricane evacuation all the local gas stations sell out of fuel, as they are being hit not only by the locals stocking up, but also the tens / hundreds of thousands of evacuees.

Our South Carolina home park is in the "bullseye" of the eclipse. Our small park has a waiting list equal to half the sites in the park, about three times the number available for rental.

Talked to my son who lives in Nashville, TN, he said all the hotels are sold out in the area to people who want to see the Eclipse. I guess that is supposed to be a good viewing area.

So Illinois is directly in the path, also longest duration area. That area doesn't have many large towns, but they're expecting up to 350,000 viewers!!! Close to the normal population of the whole area. Infrastructure will be stretched to the breaking point. Police, Fire, EMS, Restaurants, groceries all maxed out!! Even having Ozy Osborn concert. Crazy!!!! We left in June, but much family still there. Will be a zoo!

My thought, if you aren't looking for a place to camp and are just going to drive into the path of totality. Then look for a relatively rural spot and pull off on a side road where you can see the sky. In a city, any large parking lot will probably do. If it's a grocery store, go inside before hand and buy some refreshments to consume while watching.
Yes, lots of people will probably try to get out to watch, but there are lots of square miles for them to stand in.

Another thing to keep in mind if you plan to just pull off on the side of the road somewhere for the eclipse, is that while totality will only last for a couple of minutes, the slow build up and ramp down from totality takes a couple of hours.
