Electric step is in, and will not come out?

We just got to Fire Creek RV resort in GA, and the automatic step on our 26' Coachmen Freedom Express Class C will not come out. The step light comes on, but step will not come out? I can't get it enough down and out, to even work on it? Hot can I at least get the step out manually? Thanks, Lou

The problem could be within the control unit itself. But it could be something simple like the magnetic reed switch mounted on the door frame. Have you tried tapping on it to see if anything moves? That switch would be the first thing I'd check for proper operation.

You can also try lubricating the hinges to see if the steps are binding. Of course check the fuse and wiring connections.
In order to manually extend the steps, you'll need to disconnect the linkage arm from the gear to the steps.

I have had this happen 3 times on our less than two year old Miramar 35.3. The first time the dealer fixed it without changing any parts. The next two times the controller and the motor were replaced. If it happens again, I will remove the stairs and just bring a portable step as I am tired of fixing it!

Place a jack or lever under it to remove the bind. Look in the crack between the steps and remove cotter key. Drive the cleves pin out.

You may have to shear the pin and drive till flush, and then use a small pickle fork under the head to finish.

Could be:
-magnetic reed switch (you can test this by placing a magnet on it)
-motor (test with a 12vdc power sorce and heavy alligator clips directly to motor)
-fuse or breaker (check with voltmeter)
-bad ground to frame (test with 12vdc circuit tester with lightbulb in it for load, you can have voltage present and still have a bad ground, circuit fails under load)
-control module (if motor works when powered direct and reed switch engages ok with magnet, it's most likely a control module or bad circuit ground)

If you are travelling you can disconnect the linkage at the pivot point of actuator arm and bungee it up if step fails to retract...if it fails to extend you may want to leave it until you can get homw or to a dealer.

Steps are not fun.....

There is a swing arm which connects the step motor to the step. The swing arm can be detached which will allow the step to move freely for further diagnosis. You need to remove a cotter pin and then punch out a small round bar.

Stuck in step

At this point, I just want to disconnect the motor, and just use manually. Mine does not have a cotter pin. I tried removing the big bolt on the arm, and using a big pribar, could not get the arm off. The arm attaches to a large square bar.

In my case, I found if I started the engine, and shut it off, the step came out. It did not work every time, but once I got it to come out, I was able to disconnect the arm, and use step manually the rest of our trip.

How did you secure the step in the retracted position at the end of your trip, or were you able to fix the step before driving the RV again? Thanks
