Does the Tesla have electric motor power steering? I have noticed that some (later Jeeps come to mind) have had problems / solutions for four down towing that affected the steering mechanism as the tires are pulling the steering wheel, not the other way around which is normal.

Agreed. I had considered that, but my thought was (if I'm just wishing out loud).

1) The system would provide minimal drag. Something like a trickle charge.

2) Have an inclinometer so it would know when it's going uphill. During uphill runs the regen process stops so the wheels free spin (coast).

3) When the battery is full, it just goes into free spin mode.

The idea is not to be the primary mode of charging, but merely provide one more option.

Well, EV’s regen quite strongly. It wouldn’t be long before a battery is fully charged. Going down a hill in an EV your range ratchets up pretty quick. This is why EV’s never need break pads. In something like a Nissan Eplus some people don’t touch their brake pedal more than a few times a month.

Software changes would make it simple, coach sends signal when braking, and car regens and uses regular brakes when necessary.
When battery full, only regular brakes slow car. Trouble is getting EV manufacturer to go for it.

Our Clovis CA police department has two electric motorcycles. The officers told me they have no problem with range for their work in the city.

They are starting to show up in our town. Things are dead quiet.

I just read today that some 4+ year old Teslas are "bricking".
Their flash drive is being rewritten so often that it eventually burns out. You can still drive the car, but you can't recharge it and the center screen is blank.
If you can get it to a Tesla service center, it's $2500-3000 to fix it but it takes forever to get the parts.

Not the same kind of "bricking" I was referring to.

We have a Chevy Volt. One of the best compromise solutions that was never marketed properly. We pull it on a dolly or a enclosed trailer.
50 miles of electric only (around town ) with 325 additional generator powered miles ( it’s always a electric car but uses the onboard gas engine generator) We have taken several 7-900 mile trips using gas only or a combination. If running on gas it gets 41mpg. You can use the steering wheel paddle regen as a brake. Or just use “L “ on the shift column to one pedal drive. ( the car has no transmission )
GM killed the car last year. Who knows where the tech in it will go. It’s a real shame
No range anxiety. Fantastic power .. I can beat a lot of people off the line! And electric for most store and back uses. Very quiet . At 14 cents kWh I think I figured the gas equivalent was something like 1.65
I leased it because I wasn’t sure about the tech but it’s been bulletproof.
I really think this tech would be a great choice for a motorhome

I came within about 3 inches of getting hit by an electric scooter that ran a red light in China. It was extremely quiet.

Electric Vehicles

I’m very entrigued by the idea of an EV, and someday may actually own one, but videos like this one tell me they’re just not ready for the masses.

https://youtu.be/yjklex38lkQ

In this video the guys from TFL are trying to drive from Colorado to Portland, Oregon in a Tesla Model X, pulling a small camping trailer. About 3.5 hours in, they figure out that at their current pace, an otherwise 19 hour trip is going to take 36 hours. They end up calling a colleague to meet them with a Ram truck so they can complete the trip.

Many of the Dad’s comments mirror my own.

Possibly this is a case of the wrong tool for the job.

BTW . . . To the poster that has the Chevy Volt. I believe the Volt was the right approach. I may be looking for a used one, but like you. . . I’m very concerned about the crazy complicated drive train. It looks like a disaster waiting to happen, and very few people know how to work on them.
