It seems I might have 6 or 7 days to kill the second week in September while I have all my windows defogged so I guess for once in my life I'll have time to play tourist as it's not really cost effective to drop the bus off and then go back and pick it up
I'm looking for suggestions for things to do in the area.

There's the RV Hall of Fame/Museum, Newmar etc. factory tours, lots of good places to eat, Carlyle's custom wood works for RV's (bring money). The Newmar customer lounge has lots of literature on things to do.

Tuesday & Wednesday the flea market @ Shipshewana, plus lots of stores to visit while there. A stop @ Das Dutchman Essenhaus, near Middlebury, to enjoy some of the best cooking around, is always in our plans when in the area.
Enjoy, Indiana Journey

In addition to the Elkhart area look a bit west to, I think Shipshawana (Spelling is clearly not my best skill here) where you will find a large Amish contingent, and many attractions based on their culture.
If you are a member of the Moose, they have a lovely lodge in Elkhart as well, a few blocks from the Damon factory (Country blocks though)
Just drive about, check out the sights,, Ok, not those sights or the wife may smack you, check out the landmark type sites..
Seriously,, Visit the visitor's center, C of C or whatever and I'm sure they have an attractions list. Or stop in the LOBBY of a hotel for said list.

Try some of the Civil War battlegrounds...Gettysburg is pretty close and worth a full day of exploring and visiting the museum.

Visit the University of Notre Dame in South Bend. Beautiful campus. If tickets are available go to a game.

Elkhart itself is a pretty town, with two rivers meeting in the middle, and lots of parks for walking. The RV Hall of Fame is a must -- catch it now, before it closes for lack of funding.
