Engine brake, mileage

Does using the engine brake decrease mpg?

Thanks.

Chuck

The answer is no, engine brakes when engaged do not cause the engine to consume any diesel fuel when engaged. The ECM shuts off all fuel flow when the engine brake (or compression brake, NOT necessarily a transmission brake) is engaged. The latter w.r.t. a transmission brake is my ignorance, as I am not as familiar with its operation.

You're gliding along at 256 MPG.

It only activates when your not pressing on the throttle, so no it doesn't.

Diesel engines stop fuel flow to the cylinders, when the throttle is released, until the engine drops to idle speed or you step on it again.

Yes it does increase mileage until you lose it again on the next upgrade.

I don't mind going downhill, it's the sudden stop at the bottom that's a killer.
