Engine question
It would appear that I need a new engine in my rv. It is the workhorse chassis with the 8.1l vortec. The options that I have come up with are a rebuilt with a 6 month or 6,000 mile warranty or a 2007 engine that is new with no warranty. The 2007 is from a batch of 7 that a guy got from Forest River on chassis. The rebuilt I do not know any history on. We only use our RV about 5 to 7 times a year for about 3,500 miles. My RV is. 2003 34' Holiday Rambler Vacationer with 19,000 miles.

price difference? Any outfit thats going to provide a warranty will likely be an exchange hassle. So youll be out labor twice.
Im thinking $2500 for a complete low mileage engine would be reasonable. Cant even tell you what labor would be... may 10-12hrs plus parts.

Since I know nothing about these later model 8.1 Vortec's,,, I'd ask first what possibly caused the broken piston.. Is it a known problem with these engines ? If it is,,, I sure wouldn't buy another one with possibly the same defect. In that case, I'd go with the rebuilt,,, with after market parts...

i would bet it was from intake leaking water into a cyl.and you know u can't compress liquid . seen it happen many times on GM engines .when u replace the engine i would replace the intake with after market .

But that doesn't replace the intake manifold.

first Ive heard of this???? If the leak was that big (for hydro lock)... you would notice lots of white smoke.

I just have the engine in my jeep rebuilt. A short time after it was installed I had a lot of blow by, pressure in the crankcase. It was under warrenty, the engine was torn down, two cracked pistons. Pistons came in a kit, pistons were made in India. The rebuilder covered under warrenty and I now have a good motor. It appears that a lot of parts are poor quality.
