Essential items for first trip?
My wife and two kids are picking up our '18 Kodiak 283BHSL next week and heading out. What things can I purchase now that will make things go smooth once we get to the site? This will be our first time since having kids.

normal everyday kitchen and toiletry items that you use at home... but ultimately, nothing is a deal breaker, and a grocery or hardware store is probably along the way, should you 'forget' something...
don't fret it, it's part of the fun...

Glad to have you here in the forum with us. You're gonna like it here.
If you do a search in the small green box, above, for "camping checklists", you'll find many lists that others have found useful.
Good luck on your first outing.
Happy Trails!!!

As suggested, 'Camping' a couple of nights in your driveway will go a long way to showing you the things that you've forgotten.
Everybody has different 'essentials', so it's hard to say for sure what you and yours will need.
-Food and clothes of course.
-Hoses for water in and water (waste) out.
-Basic tools to fix whatever needs it (I understand it's new, however I bet you find a loose screw or something similar).
-Power cord and adapters. The adapters differ depending on what connection your RV has. Just bring enough that you can plug into any outlet on the pedestal. For me that means a 20 to 30 amp adapter, and a 30 to 50 amp adapter.
-A credit card, in case you need to run to a store to buy something that you MUST have.
Welcome, and have fun!

Does regular toilet paper count as normal or is rv toilet paper really recommended?

Camp in the driveway and do normal things. Gather the minimum stuff you need to accomplish those tasks. Do not waste money and especially storage space on things you think you might need but actually never use. This is a common mistake. We bought duplicates of everyday use items like toothbrushes, coffeemaker, handheld vacuum ... to cut down on loading and unloading of things we always take.

Depends on who you ask ! !
And what type tank/toilet/dump you have...
Somewhat like the which oil to use or Ford vs Chevy vs Dodge
The wife wants the soft rv type and since it affects her more than me - the price difference is not that much...

Oh, you've opened a can worms there!!
Lots of vastly differing opinions on this one.
MY opinion is that regular toilet paper is fine, BUT there are some that are 'more fine' than others. Basically any TP that says it's good for septic systems is good for the RV.
A quick test, put 2 or 3 squares of TP in a glass of water, cover the glass and shake it vigorously for a few seconds. If the TP has broken up then it's fine. If it's just a solid blob in the glass then try something else.
We use Scott's Extra Soft, same as we use at home.

Bonus points to Blondie for coming up with THE most necessary thing to pack, and LOTS of it!
There WILL be times when you'll need every wee little bit of it to get through 'this', whatever this is.
But the rewards are worth it.

How about something simple,,, make sure you can change a tire on the trailer... As in a jack,, (might be able to use the tow vechicle jack) and a right size lug wrench, (or of course socket/rachet/extension) Check tire pressures, before leaving home and again before leaving camp ground,,, only takes maybe 2 minutes.... Other than that,, a few assorted fuses , then above comments are good... Over time you will build on what you take... Got chairs for outside ? No sweat,,, have a Great time !!!!
