Ah one solved. The trees on the PEI highway signs are a nod to their provincial flag!
The three small oaks represent the three counties on PEI and the one large oak signifies the protection of Great Britain.

I do not know why the different signs across Canada. In the western provinces almost all signs are the same or at least very similar but when you get east of Manitoba that all changes.

Key word is " EAST " they figure ; we've got the population and the capital , we make the rules . Sorry don't get me started on a political rant or I'll get kicked out of the forums.

Years ago, driving a bus full of teenagers to Banff for a wilderness hike, we saw many new pictograph signs. We figured out many, but one near Medicine Hat was a sewing machine. Tailor? Sewing Circle? Clothing store? We never did figure it out. Also we didn't see the need for Canadian National Park vehicles to have 'Parc Canada' AND 'Canada Parks' on the sides. One or the other seemed to be enough.

It`s the law!! Don`t agree with it but..........I`m just an English speaking tax payer!!
We are required by law to use both official languages on Federal "property".
Now in the USA that would be Spanish but that hasn`t been made law. Go to most stores in the southern USA and you will see signs in both Spanish and English, even on the products you purchase at your local Walmart.

I knew it was the law in Canada because of the large influence of Quebec, but try explaining that to teenagers.
No, it wasn't a spinning wheel, it was a sewing machine. We saw a listing of explanations of most pictographs at a rest stop and figured out the spinning wheel.

Signs are a lot easier in Western Canada...the further east you go the more rarified the air gets I think. The more ridiculous rules are....example the language police in Quebec

Jack1234. When did Canada change from driving on the left, to driving on the right. I drove to Montreal in the 1970,s & seem to remember driving on the right. But we all know just how accurate those 40 yr old memories are.

Don't get us Western Canadians going on Eastern Canada. You could start a war! West starts with Ontario. East does not include the Atlantic Provinces.

As far as I know, Canadians have driven on the right since the 1920's when it was made law! 
One thing I have noticed is that in many parts of Canada the highway exits are signed ahead of time so that you know what services are available at the upcoming exit. Last time I drove in the USA I never could tell what was at an exit until I looked back over my shoulder, darn! Have since bought the book, Next Exit, LOL.
