Hi CampDaven,
All the extended warranties (service contracts) I have purchased have paid for themselves. Claim quantity was small, but when things go wrong, the cost can be large. I even purchased a second service contract for my 05 GMC ENVOY. GM offered it and I purchased it. I've had two claims on this policy, so far. There are two more years to go. Those are the tangible statements. In addition there is the peace of mind that for me, is priceless.

Riverc: Guess it is all related to your contract cost as opposed to potential payout. If you had paid $18.00 in lieu of $1800.00, bet you would not have posted your thoughts.

What about your homeowner's insurance? Does it concern you that your insurance company has not yet paid you for any of your claims? Or have they.....? Just sayin'

I will need to weigh the options when the time comes.

so far the extended warranty has been worth it besides the peace of mind and it is better if you can have your selling dealer do the repairs.

new coach a/c compressor
new hydraulic leveling jack
new rear view camera
replace slide out seal on 22' slide out
repair leaking power steering gear box
new power window shade

this is on a new 2008 Knight DFT purchased 2009

It was worth it

Ask the dealer: So you don't think the (insert product here) will last as long as the payments? Then why would I want to buy it (the product) at all?

Scooter,every extended warranty I have purchased over the years Rv's,Auto,appliances I have never had to use them.I will just take a gamble from now own.If something major happens I will go to my Credit Union and take out a personal loan if I have too.

And no I do not have Homeowners insurance,because I do not own one lol.

We bought a 2006 in 2008 that had 3,000 miles and purchased an extended warrenty. We have had enought claims to more than offset the cost of the EW and deductable. All our claims have been for non-coach maufacturer items. They were 2-jacks, 3-jack controllers, slideout motor, 2-rear camera displays, inverter repair, and in dash radio.

I normally do not buy any extended warranties. As a general rule, it's cheaper to be self insured for repairs to devices, vehicles, etc. when considered over one's lifetime.

Exception can be when one does not have the cash on hand to cover repairs on something that can potentially have large unexpected expenditures. A mitigation for this is a credit card (no annual fee and to be used only in such cases).

Another exception can be the purchase of used device with potentially large expenditures, and you have no experience with the reliability history or case of the device. In this case an extended warranty can provide mitigation of 'hidden' issues - and typlically only needed for limited time until reliabiliy history is established (the first year). This can be the case of a MH purchase. A high deductable can be used to keep the cost down by assuming the liability for non-major repairs.

IMHO.
