Hi! Hope you get some answers to your question. I have had friends who have bought extended service plans and have been happy with them. I have not bought one yet. I think it's good to remember that you are dealing with an insurance company and insurance companies are interested in making a profit on you. Consequently, the insurance in the long run will often cost more than the repairs. Also, they often don't insure vehicles that are more than 7 or 10 years old. You might want to consider insurance if you can afford the payments, but are unlikely to be able to afford a big hit on a repair.
