Hi everyone,
Since I am new to RV ownership I am considering the extended warranty
on my just purchased 05 Winnebago Journey 39F.It has low miles(20000)
and original owner but after a lot of time spent here and other forums it seems like lots of things can break, fail,etc.Plan on doing fixes on it myself as I have mechanical background but insurance seems like good idea. Any
input would be appreciated .The warranty I am looking at is GoodSam Gold about 1700 for the 1st year. Thanks

We had the Good Sam extended warranty and it was a waste of money. An example would be.
Slide is covered except for seals, wood and metal structures
Cooling system covered except for radiator, hoses, thermostat
Start saving a little each month for expenses.

I would suggest a call to Wholesalewarranties.net. The were very knowledgeable and offered a few different choices when I needed to renew my warranty and the previous company would not extend past original purchase.
However, if you like to do the work yourself you may have some problems. My current warranty requires that the work be done by a "service professional" with a registered repair business. All work must be authorized in advance, and must be reported promptly. Lots of hoops to jump through to get service, and if you skip a step don't expect to get coverage. In my experience, WholesaleWarranties acted as my agent and helped me coordinate with the shop and the warranty company for a successful conclusion.
But if you like to fix things yourself, I bet you will not get them to cover parts, and they might reject a claim because you tried to correct the problem first without making a prompt claim.
I'm not into self repairs...I can, I just have other hobbies, so the warranty is a good thing for me.

The plan you are considering is not an extended warranty. This is a service plan, variations are offered by several different companies, but these are completely separate from the manufacturers of your RV and it's components. There are strong opinions for and against such plans, and many posts. Use "Search" and do some research before buying anything.

As long as you understand it is insurance and not a "fix everything" warranty, it is worth considering. I do think, though, that you can get better coverage for less money with a plan other than Good Sam. A friend just bought the Cornerstone Service Plan through Lazydays RV (Tampa, FL) after making a detailed comparison of multiple plans. GS cost more and provided less.

You should also be aware that the plan won't reimburse you for any repair you do yourself. Won't even pay for the parts.

Read the fine print carefully - there are lots of common failures that are not covered, or are covered only under specific & limited circumstances.

I purchased Good Sam for two years and each year it paid for itself each year. There were three break downs while traveling. The problems were: the Cat fan bearing, heui pump, and finally a lift pump. I suspect I could have done any of the repairs if I had been home but I wasn't. There are members who will say don't get it, just put the premium aside and then use that money when repairs are necessary. That would not have worked for me. Personally, I'd suggest you get a plan, Good Sam or another one at least for the first year or until you are satisfied it is in great & dependable condition. I don't remember how much my Good Same cost but it was much less than the $1700 you mention. May I have a different plan or higher deductible.

I just started my research on warranties.. My dealer offered me "Easy Care" It's for 6 years or 66K miles. $50 per repair.

Another thing to consider is that if the insurance company goes out of business you just lost your insurance and money you paid for it.

Now that you are probably thoroughly confused as I was when researching whether to buy a service contract my son said dad insurance companies are in business because they take in a whole lot more money than they pay out. So odds are you will pay out in premiums more than you will collect for repairs, we do have the money to pay for any repairs but not everyone does. Hope this helps but I spent a lot of time going back and forth on this decision.

I have the Good Sam Extended Warranty and it has more than paid for itself. I purchased an American Eagle (05) with only 31K for mileage that was in excellent shape overall. I just had the computer module go out of the Onan generator to the tune of $3500 . . . . . so if you don't know the coach take the warranty.
