Fatal Rest Area Accident

I'm not sure this has been posted...

Abilene Reflector-Chronicle - Semi collides with motor home in Solomon rest area killing one injuring others

I'm thinking they were from Point Blank, TX, northeast of Houston not Point Break.

Excerpt from the article ....
"Technical trooper Benjamin Gardner said the impact from the crash caused the motor home to catch fire. He said people at the rest stop were able to remove the semi driver and the sleeping couple, who were in the very back of their motor home."

Unlike automobiles that have protected gas tanks (for the most part) RVs do not enjoy the same security since the tank just simply sits in between the rails. Add a full tank of LP within a few feet of the gas tank and as you can see it can make for a nasty incident.

In regard to over-all fleet safety with motorhomes, we don't hear very often where this type of incident is any where near common.

Reading about the forensics that are reported, I would expect that we all are now more inclined to seek a location somewhat out of the way of a runaway vehicle.

With a heavy heart I offer condolences to the family of the of the Texas victim of this tragic accident.

Sad day--

Talk about being in the "wrong place at the wrong time"-

If I read the article correctly it happened right after the noon hour- I thought it would have been a night time, bad weather accident.

Wow, this loss of life makes me sad. The article made me reflect on the places that I've slept in trucks, and had my family sleep in RVs. All I can do is thank the Lord for His protection.

It sounds like the truck driver may have suffered a heart attack leading up to the crash.

Wow very sad, our prayers go out to the family.

Our first stop at a rest area we slept right after the entrance ramp, won't do that again. I wonder if having a toad would help at all, kind of a buffer between you and the on coming vehicle.

That was a shame. I guess you can't ever be to safe wherever you may be. Our sympathy goes out for everyone involved.

Our sympathy to the family. That's a wakeup call for us RVers to be more careful where we park. We've never slept over in a rest area. Never felt safe in one.
