Filthiest roadways!

Coming in to Midland/Odessa on 158 (from the SE) we thought possibly a trash truck had overturned (for 25 miles). Then drove back to Big Spring (eastward) and departed westbound to Quartzite both on I-20. Within 25 miles of Midland/Odessa were the filthiest roads we've EVER seen. Guess it's hard to worry about cleanliness when you're making all that oil money.

Haven't used that route or been in that area since the early 90s but I'm surprised to hear that it's gotten that bad.

Maybe they should put the prisoners out there doing that.

Oh, wait, that's "cruel and unusual punishment" and prohibited. Guess we'll just have to let them watch TV more to punish them.

I have yet to see any road that is "clean". None. We see too many people letting things fly out the window from the store bags to stuff from fast food places to cigarettes (lit and unlit). If people want clean places they need to stop littering. But most people don't think about it and just let things go out the window whether on purpose or not it's still wrong.

I agree, with all the crooks we have in jail, we should be able to make them at least clean the roads. We should have the cleanest country in the world.

Too bad everyone has jobs already. We might have someone available to clean up the roads.

Not necessarily. Maricopa County in AZ has been doing it for years. Roadside cleanup is also a choice for people sentenced with community service.

Last summer we saw some VERY clean roads...mainly accompanied by a few "Bazillion Dollar Fine" signs that were apparently enforced. Unless the cops are willing to enforce the littering laws already on the books, we'll keep driving through the trash.

It snows here in Florida on some roads...no, that's just Wal-Mart shopping bags. Bob

Lived out there years ago but part of the trash problem in places like West Texas is due to topography & wind. This time of year the cotton fields are stripped & when the wind blows, which it almost always does there, the trash is blown & blown until it gets near the highways where there is grass & brush to collect it. Of coarse if people collected there trash this wouldn't be a problem.

I've always thought that using prison labor would be an excellent way to maximize our ability to recycle our refuse. Use our human garbage to sort our garbage. Keeps them busy, reduces our cost of incarceration and helps the environment.

For the white roof line of my class A it's usually I10 from PHX to LAX because of the truck traffic.

And yes we do have some of the cleanest roadways here in Maricopa County, AZ because we have the country's toughest Sherriff.

dirtiest roadsides I've seen have been at the borders of indian reservations in AZ and UT. I'd never seen DOZENS of cases of beer bottles piled up every few car lengths on the shoulder.

Capable welfare recipients could also clean roadways.
