Finding a PPI specialist

how do you find a prepurchase inspection person when you're out of state from the motorhome you want to buy?

First try Google oe some other search engine. If you don't find one that way, try contacting a mobile RV tech and if needed a mechanic.

None in particular. But I am subscribed to the ads posted to this forum. I've seen some that seem to be to good to be true. So they got me thinking how would I check to verify the facts of the ad.

Does the forum have any policy regarding the accuracy of the ad or the veracity of the dealer or poster?

I asked, because on three occasions over the past few years I've done some initial inspections to see if the coach was as advertised. I never charged anyone, just had one guy pay my gas on a 250 mile round trip.

You might find some other forum members to do the same. If it looks like a good coach, than have someone do a full inspection.

Yep, I've done it too.
In one instance I told them to forget it as their was water dripping from the ceiling when I went in. I would never buy from that dealer anyway but that cinched it!

I would bet that the answer is no. It would be very difficult for them to do that and I know that the forum which I help to moderate does not have such a policy. It's pretty much just a classified ad. People often join internet forums just to advertise their RV.

Be wary of companies that advertise specifically for pre purchase inspections. Make sure they have references that you can actually contact via phone or email that aren't a close friend or relative of theirs that they use to make it appear as if they are a legit company.

I have run across a few complaints over the years from people who hired "inspectors" only to find out that the inspector hasn't owned a motorhome/TT and in one instance an inspector who's never even camped in one, rarely are any of them insured...

A proper PPI requires at least an entire day to perform properly.. and in some cases longer. For example, all the holding tanks need flooded and checked for leaks, batteries need their specific gravity numbers and more importantly the differences in the SG between the cells, oil samples need drawn from the engine and trans and sent to a lab to be analyzed, which can take around a week or so, interior need disassembled in places to check for current or previous water leaks, suspension needs thoroughly looked through, a 20 mile road trip needs done, etc etc etc etc. My list is over 5 pages long....

If done properly it's not a quick process and is not inexpensive.
