In anticipation to some comments I hank you in advance.

I take my personal defense with me except Canada. The legal route for you is to look at each state you are going to travel in for their specific laws. You can Google
this info. My advice is be safe and feel safe.

I plan to carry my firearm no matter what any state law states. I know this isn't a good statement but I plan to protect my family. I carry my pistol in an area of my TR that if I needed it at a rest stop or parking lot I can get to it in secs (yes I've practiced). Then when I get to the CG I have two locking compartments I put it in depending on if I'm sleeping or up and about (just like @ home). But that's for me. I don't expect anyone to take my practice and use it...

It's going to be bad if you get caught, and if you shoot someone you most likely will get caught. Different laws for different states. The Federal Law allows you to transport it anywhere in the continental US, however the state laws may recognize that as "pass through, do not stop."
Your decisions, but look at the laws if you are law abiding.
Do I carry on the road? I'll never tell. I do have a CHL.

As a Canadian, I just don't understand the need or want to carry a firearm with you for protection. The US is a wonderful place except when it comes to firearms. If it's really that bad in some places, why not just avoid them in the first place?
