Flat tow a 2012 VW Passat TDI stick

Hello RV World,

We are trying to find a new toad for our travels this coming summer to replace the 2007 VUE we purchased used. The number one and two vehicles we are looking at are the 2012 Volkswagen Passat TDI and the Jetta Sportswagon both with a 6 speed manual transmission. VW says you void their warranty if you flat tow any of their vehicles.

IS THERE ANY ONE OUT THERE THAT IS TOWING EITHER OF THESE VW's and if so what has been your experience and what are the specifics?

The clue will be whether you can get a baseplate for these vehicles. They are not on the FMCA list as towable.

Really don't see any reason you can't tow anything with a Stick shift. When we went to Alaska one of the units was towing 4 down a jetta. I'd call DEMCO and see what they recommend. Keep in mind even if you find a baseplate VW will void you warranty. You could always purchase one of those driveshaft disconnect from DEMCO. Safe trAVELS... ed

I'm not sure on those 2 cars but I tow a 2012 Chevy Sonic manual. Blue Ox sells the base plates for it and the operators manual indicates 4 wheels down towing is allowed up to 65 MPH. It's an inexpensive car and I get around 40 MPG on mine. It also weights well under 3000 lbs so most states do not require a breaking system.

I have the 1.4 Turbo model and it's fun to drive! Good luck with your quest!

If the VW Factory has told you not to do it, DON"T DO IT. Or if you decide to follow someone else's advice and you have a warrantee problem, make sure you get there telephone number to call and complain. Just my dimes worth, your mileage may vary.

Take a look at Subaru. We tow a 2012 Impreza, 5 speed manual. I emailed Subaru Customer Service before I bought and got written clarification that it was ok to tow 4 down with a manual trans.

There are far to many vehicles that can be towed and are backed by the manufacturer. Do you really want to tow something that the builder has stated you will lose any warranty on the vehicle ?
