I considered one of those flat hoses until I read all the negative comments. Decided to go with a permanently mounted hose reel plumbed with PEX to my water inlet. It's a great time-saver particularly when we're getting ready to leave. I never have to fight to coil up a stiff, cold hose covered with grass or dirt.

OK, there are many different types of flat wind hoses for RV's. The only one you should consider buying is the fabric one. The others are most likely a piece of junk based on the number of posts on this thread. I can't imagine that all of the people posting here had purchased the fabric flat hose versus some unknown plastic type one.

However, the very first thing to get rid of is the reel. That's a real PITA. I removed mine right after I bought it and now you can buy just the plain flat hose without the reel.

If you happen to poke a hole in the fabric, identify where the hole is and when completely dry, dab some super glue onto the area surrounding the hole. Works like a charm.

I have had mine for almost 4 years now and it stows really small compared to the regular ones. When space is a premium as it is in my coach, I like small versus gangly hoses.

I also use a bunch of braided washing machine hoses if the run from the spigot to the coach isn't too far. When I am set up for a long stay, I will have one section going from the pressure valve at the spigot to the filter housing, another from the filter to my water softener and another from the softener to the coach.

The only time I pull out the 25 foot flat fabric hose is when the spigot is too far away.

I had the fabric covered one and it leaked the second summer. It was kept in the shade and the handle broke off.

No handle on the hose to break off. There's one on the reel but that's why I suggested NOT to buy the combo unit. The reel is a PITA!

The hose will last a long time if not abused. And to fix any holes, use Super Glue unless the entire length of your hose is leaking.

I have a combination of flat and regular. However, don't use the reel as others have pointed out they become difficult to use, so just bought the regular 25 ft type. I use them as extensions when the need occurs. For example, washing the coach, back in rv sites where the faucet is located opposite side, yes this does happen or when dumping the black and grey tanks with the macerator. Obviously a different set of hoses. They roll up nice and tight and are easy to store. No leaks yet. Just say'in!

I have both the 50 ft.

available from CampingWorld. Have been using them for 6+ years and if they break, I'll buy the same thing again.

Yes, you have to take them completely off the reel. That's why the two different lengths. 25ft. when were close to the supply and 50ft. (or 75ft combined) when further away. The rollers on the reel squeeze water out as you reel in the hose. Couldn't be happier with them.

I find this post very refreshing, no pun intended. Nobody is worried about gremlins in the hose! I still drink from a garden hose that has been run a bit and has cold water. Born when the big war was half over….

I have to look into these flat hoses as I only use water from my fresh water tank and do not have an internal house filter setup. I use an inline filter on the hose.

The bummer is the external tank fill is curb side on this rig. So normal extensions take up a lot of room. Patching flat hoses with Super Glue sounds good to me if needed.

It can also give your dog cancer if you fill their water bowel from a garden hose.

I don't know if it makes it drinking water safe, but my fabric covered flat hose has a white liner.

I also question super glue. With it being brittle, how long would it last with the expansion and contraction of the hose?

I fill my fresh tank with soft water from my house and haven't needed to use city water.

From the responses I can only gather that there are mail order brands that are junk. Like Richard said, buy the fabric ones and NOT with a hose reel. I purchased 1-10' and 2-25' which covers every possible need for me. I love how they roll up in the palm of my hand and I have had them at least 10 years and never a leak. They were bought at C.W.

As a side note: I use a hose to fill my tanks and then unhook them. I rarely have them pressurized for days or weeks on end since I prefer to use the water pump versus city water pressure. Maybe that explains the long life I get from them???
