Hi all.
I have booked a flydrive holiday to Florida commencing 24th Sept 2005.
I've had a look on the WWW and HM Government (UK)sites but cannot find anyone suggesting that Florida should be avoided or that tourists would be unwelcome at this time.
I don't want to exacerbate any existing problems so would welcome any advice/comments from those of you on the ground.

UKRVR,
Come on over! We need your tourist $$$. Now, don't forget that there's more hurricane season to come, so even though Katrina is over, there's still other names that might visit us.

Only minor damage in Florida - some trees down and that sort of thing. A lot of homes in south Florida were without power for a few hours or a few days, but that is more inconvenience and discomfort than anything else. Some of my daughter's tropical fish died because the aquarium's air pump was off too long...
Fuel prices are dramatically higher than a week ago, but UK residents will likely think them normal.

What about Florida panhandle? We are due to go to Topsail hill near Destin in a couple weeks. Like Cam, we don't want to be in the way, or taking gas and water and space from victims of Katrina.
Pete.

PMOUNTAIN,
Come on down, from what I hear Topsail is fine.
I would as a precaution give them a call, but I doubt that they will be used as any type of temporary housing.
From what I can see the fuel supply is fine, just a little more expensive these days.
Florida has plenty of room for visitors from up north, the UK, and any folks that might need temporary housing as a result of Katrina.

I too am coming over at the end of October to do a 3 month tour across to California. The trouble is. That a lot of what we wanted to see has now gone. We will now have to go a little further North.

JohnSandyWhite,
As your plans firm up, please check back in the Florida area. We are tossing around some ideas for road trips that might turn out to fit in with your plans. You could hook up with any of our gatherings.
The Appalachian group also gets together fairly often and their locations might fit with your developing plans.
There was a nifty LA/Texas rally planned for October. The latest post I have read from that area says it is still on, depending on space availability. The campgrounds are very full with evacuees still.
Each E/W interstate in the U.S. crosses some interesting places and sites. Just don't go too far north if you're getting into November-January for travelling. Also, check in with us if you are doing the Orlando scene. Lots of us live pretty close to Orlando and would love to meet and swap stories. Road trip to England, Florida Boomers??
