Was going through North Carolina the other day and stopped at the Flying J for gas; I didn't notice any lock or anything on the dump station; have they quite charging to dump?

I would think they are expecting you to know you are supposed to go to the fuel desk to pay.

Just curious: Does it cost Flying J money to get rid of waste? I am asking because i genuinely don't know how the waste system in th US works.

Where I live (Denmark) we pay for every cubic meter of water we use, and then we pay additionally for exactly the same amount of cubic meters waste. Even if you water the garden you will pay for water that supposedly should have gone in the drain. Tis used to be an negligibly cost but this is not the case anymore.

They may not have converted all the dump stations with the payment machines yet. I would say if doesn't have one yet and there is NO sign indicating you have to pay inside it is still free.

Regarding the removing of the waste, YES there is a charge for having the holding tanks emptied.

Most Flying J's are in the boondocks or in an unincorperated area and are on a very large septic system because they are so far from town.

Depends on where they are located. My understanding is the local city or county can mandate local charges.

I believe most Pilot/Flying J's charge $10.00 to dump. If I use my frequent fueler discount RV card it's $5.00 off. If I use my professional driver card I get $7.00 off.
$3.00 to dump isn't bad.

If they are in a rural area (many are), they will have a septic system and will have to pay someone periodically to pump out their tank. If they have city sewer, most municipalities charge for sewage based on water use same as in Denmark.

In general, yes, if they're on a municipal sewer system.

In most areas, you pay for both water and sewer, based on the water meter. In some areas, you can get two water meters so you don't pay sewer charges for outdoor use. In others, the utility uses your winter average for water for year-round sewer usage, assuming the extra in the summer is external (non-sewer) use.

Does it cost: YES. But that is not the biggie.

I was in Georgia at a rest/welcome area and noticed they have a RV dump station.... Blocked off. I ask them about it.

Well, this center is just outside the city of Lavonia and is serviced by their sewer dept, The problem was brats, Vandals who would drop hard steel and other stuff down the pipe.. This got into the lift pumps and resulted in the pump haveing to be replaced 3 times in one year.. Those puppies are EXPENSIVE.

And some stuff other stuff down the pipe cloggin it and requiring maintenance come clear the clog. It's amazing what some jerks will stuff in that pipe.

So the fee, is not so much to offset cost of disposing as it is to discourage the brats because if they have 10 bucks, they are going somewhere else to blow it.

I use Flying J whenever possible, I've never seen one that has a pay dump station at a Flying J. Used them Where available from Alaska to Florida. (only find them in the lower 48)
