We are planning a trip to Fairbanks from So Ca.
I have two questions.(1) Are toads really needed ? & (2) We are planning two months for the trip, enough time?. Any and all coments are welcome. I have done Mex 1 to Cabo so narrow or potholed roads are not a problem.

Thanks
Mike

Since we pull a fifth wheel I really can't answer the toad question but there are a lot of sites to see where I would rather just be driving the truck.

Two months is good, longer is better. We spent a total of 15 weeks on the road from FL to AK and return. Obviously, not all that time was spent just in AK. Be sure to enjoy the sites along the way both coming and going. Places in BC and the Yukon rival those in AK.

Here's a link to our website of our trip if you're interested:

We spent 3 months north of the Canadian border and still didn't get to see everything we wanted to, but we also spent time fishing everywhere we went. Had we just looked at the sights and moved on, two months would probably have done it. There is much to see and do in western Canada as well as Alaska. Some say more.

I see you have a 26 foot motorhome, so you are somewhat mobile without the toad. Personally I think having the toad enhances the trip, but it depends on your style. We traveled a lot of back roads looking for wildlife, following scenic rivers or finding fishing holes, but except for Anchorage and Fairbanks, all the Alaskan towns are small enough that we walked most everywhere once we arrived.

Dave & Jo Ann,

Thanks for the reply, we have decided to make it a 2-3 month trip. Your link is great.

We just finished a one month cross country trip on which we left the toad home. We run a 38 foot Foretravel and other than one or two instances did not miss the toad at all. We did rent a car for three days in Seattle leaving the coach in a KOA. Using Enterprise and a weekend special rate I think that we saved money all around.

The only thing that we would do different is not to take the toad. There is an element of comfort knowing you have another set of wheels in case of mechanical failure of the M.H. We used the Alcan hwy. going up and the Cassar hwy coming back. Have fun!!!!

We have made the trip to Alaska 5 times- 3 driving and 2 flying and renting a motorhome. We have towed a Blazer up one time and wished that we had it all the other times. It allowed us to explore places that a motorhome couldn't go.It allowed us to go to all the places that you don't want to take any motorhome unless you plan to have it towed back and be rebuilt. You should remember to take all roads at the posted speed limit or slower. When you are in construction zones go slower than the posted speed limit and you will save your rig a lot of wear and tear. If someone wants to pass you in the construction zone pull to the middle of the road to slow them down then let them pass. The sights that you will see and the things that you can do are unlimited, so do everything that you think you would like to do because you may never get the opportunity to do them ever again. Most of all have a safe and wonderful trip.
