Ford V10 Engine Issue/s

My Class C is a 2012 model with only 22300 miles. Coming home from a short trip the engine started missing and check engine light came on. Stopped at a chain parts store, borrowed their OBD2 to check codes. Two codes came up both indicating mis-fire in cylinder #2. Determined it was most likely ok to drive home (at 35 mph - made for a very slow trip). Took to Ford dealer who after diagnosing advised that cylinders #2 and #7 both were in need of new coil pack, plug and injector. Seems odd to me that all 3 items would require replacement on both cylinders. Total quote to fix $1000. + with bulk of cost labor. I get that the labor is expensive but I am wondering about the need to replace all 3 items on both cylinders. Comments?

I could see the Coil Pack and Plug but I'm not buying the Injector needs replacing. I'd take it to an independent since you're not dealing with warranty here.

I've replace hundreds of coils on this ford design. 5.4 and v-10s both. Don't recall ever having to replace an injector.

Why not replace the coil packs yourself and see if it clears up the problem? Very easy to do.

Plug Motorcraft SP-479, about $2.50
Coil Pack: Motorcraft at Advance Auto, $61.00

Start with the plug. I just changed all the plugs in my 2005 Aspect (6.8L V10), 93,000 miles, and one of the new plugs was defective from Motorcraft.

I would be surprised if it was an injector. Sounds like a "shotgun" approach to fixing a problem. That is a parts changer, not a mechanic.

EDIT: Double-check that plug part number, that was for our 2005. Probably different for your 2012.

Usually when you get a miss on any of the Triton engines its going to be one of the coil packs. When we had our F53 chassis I always carried one with us. It also seems that when one goes others will follow.

The plugs/coils on a V10 sit down in a well. They are sealed by a rubber boot. As the rubber ages, it will crack from the heat. That lets dirt and water in around the coil which destroys the coil. This usually happens in engines with around 80,000+ miles so your case is unusual. I also agree the the injector probably didn't need to be replaced. Unless it was a bad injector all along, in which case the plug and coils weren't the problem.

Ol Yeller, we have the same rig, three years apart. I just changed my plugs, all the coil packs and boots looked like new. I have 93,000 miles on our 26A. Needless to say, I didn't change any coil packs, but carrying a spare is probably a good idea.
The biggest problem I had was access, it is a tight fit in places.

At 50,000 I had a Ford dealer replace all plug.Driving from riverside ca to joshua tree, had a misfire develop on cylinder 10, per my odb2 scanner. Called dealership, took it back down. They diagnosed a bad plug, replaced the plug and all was good for a while. Developed a misfire again on cylinder 10... Went to local dealer picked up a new coilpak, replaced it. That was 16,000 miles ago, no more issue.
I would also say, sounds more like a coilpak

I was a mechanic and then a shop Foreman for 17 years. Since you are paying for the labor to remove and install the coil pack along with the plug it would be a good idea to do it. As you said the labor is the bulk of the cost. They do not have to remove the injector to replace the plug but haven't worked on a 3 valve so don't know for sure.
Sometimes it is ok to do the shotgun approach for the customer so he doesn't have to return for a repeat problem. If you were on vacation a 1,000 miles from the dealer would you want the misfire to return and find out it is the same cylinder?

As I recall, coil pack and a spark plug are no big deal to replace unless they're on the aft cylinders, in which case there's not a lot of room back there. I call BS On the injector. They last a long time unless you got some really bad fuel.
