Forgot to disconnect trailer connector

Disconnected the 5th wheel and forgot to disconnect the power. Ripped the electrical box out of the king pin, and then my spotter/wife asked "should that still be connected?". Ugh.

Thankfully only partially stripped one wire, and I was able to cover it in liquid electrical tape and remount the box. Could have been a lot worse if I would have kept going. I was a few inches away from breaking it a lot worse.

The primary failure was me of course, I have this habit of always keeping the truck hooked up OR have the 110v connected so that I have good voltage when operating the levelers. The second failure was my wife watching but not really understanding anything I'm doing.

I think I can avoid this in the future by modifying my process - always unplug when I release the pin.

I hope this helps someone else avoid this from happening.

I also wanted to know if there are any physical modifications I can make to prevent this in the future. The 7-pin connector in the truck is at a 90 degree angle, so it doesn't break away nicely. Is there a breakaway connector I can use in the cable somehow? Other ideas?

There is a different style of aftermarket plug that uses a magnetic latch, but then you can use it with your truck.

Option 2 is plug it into the plug by the receiver hitch so that it pulls out straight,

I put a strain relief on the cable, and a cable clamp so that would take the pull not the box directly
