We are doing the same trip, except from San Antonio to Daytona, next February (little race on the beach) and am interested in this thread also...we plan on staying at the Lake Pontchartrain Landing RV Resort for a couple of nights to see the sights in NOLA and then maybe a night on the beach in Panama City before hitting the infield...!

If you get a chance to stop and see the Naval Air Museum in Pensacola and the Blue Angles, by all means do it. When we were there they were running a practice on Tuesday and Wednesday. This is the same show you would see at any show they do on the road. Actually, it is better because they have people that let you know which way they are coming from so you have time to take pictures. Buy the way, this is all free, and if you want you can even take your RV onto the base parking lot. You just can't stay over night. On one of the days, the pilots will sign autographs.
For further info on their schedule go to this web site and click on their practice schedule at the bottom of the page.

We have made the trip several time, the NAS Museum is outstanding. The new pier at Navarre is the longest on the Gulf Coast and the beaches are as nice as any and with out the Destin traffic. I would suggest you avoid Hwy. 98 through Destin during rush hour, although DW does like the outlet mall there. Grayton Beach State Park is famous for being one of the most natural settings. The Suwanee River State Park is a pretty spot further east on the river with a little history. Guess we will be that way soon we usually stop at Biloxi and stay at Cajun RV park its mush easier for big rigs that some of the others. In Navarre we stay at Emerald Coast RV park, I do not pay extra for the "water front" because it is on the ICW and not the Gulf.

If you take I-10 you'll see signs for Delta Downs Casino and horse track in Louisiana. It's about 4 miles off the highway, but we went there for an overnight and really enjoyed the horse racing at night (a new experience for me) and especially watching the horses training in the early morning mist the next day...

Also boondocked along the beach on the Gulf Islands National Seashore where a few spaces are available for RVs. Wonderful walk/bike ride along the road there...
