Front Door lock not working

I left the RV this morning and locked the front door. Forgot something inside and went to unlock it, but it wouldn't! The key just kept spinning. It would do an entire 360 without unlocking. I started freaking out since my dog was inside and my husband wasn't going to be home for another 10 hrs. So I started hitting the lock and kept trying to unlock it. Finally on the second complete 360 it finally unlocked. Well obviously it won't be locked again and we need a new one. Anyone have this problem before? Are there any electric locks that are recommended? Any issues with them? I would prefer not to spend $200 on a lock but that's all I can find! Any that are a little cheaper and pretty decent?

Check out the Bauer line of locks....it includes a touch pad so you can get in when you forget your keys. Available on Amazon.com and ebay for $145 or so and on up.

Fastec lock recall

I received a letter from Fastec in regard to the recall. I don't recall if the letter was in regard to a replacement lock cylinder and lockset I bought in 2011 or if it was in regard to the 2003 Alpenlite that had the defective lock installed at the factory in Aug 2002.

I was able to gain entry to the 5th wheel by crawling thru the basement and getting my 225 pound large frame thru the small hatch that opened in the bathroom of the 5th wheel - it was no mean task but I was still unable to remove the lock and open the door. I then went back out and used a trick that burglers apparently use by tapping on the key with a hammer and finally the lock turned and i could get in to the 5th wheel.

I no longer own the 2003 Alpenlite 5th wheel a - I traded it in on a motorhome in Sept 2013.

The above information is copied and pasted from an email that I just sent to Fastec. I asked Fastec to contact the dealer who now owns the Alpenlite as it now has locks manufactured during the recall period.

Please be aware that the problem stated in the recall is evident in locks produced before 2006 as stated in the recall.

I also intend to notify the NHTSA about the problem and that the recall should cover locks made before 2006.

Perhaps now is a good time to install an RV keyless lock for trailers. I always leave a side window unlocked for this reason. We are waiting on replacement parts for our MH door electronic lock now. Thankfully it jammed in the unlock position.
