Frozen Water Filter

I left my water filter in my hose bin. I wasnt worried about it freezing because I planned on throwing it away. This is what frozen pipes and filters can look like if you dont winterize.

Yep water expands as it freezes. Glad you planned on trashing them.

An open elbow was on one end and a drained hose was on the other end. It hose was coiled up and somewhat flat.

Kinda debunks some on here's theory that if water has somewhere to expand to, no damage can be done !

Yup, that is only true when the water surface is much greater than the depth, like the little bit left in a water heater or fresh water tank.

That kind of damage should not happen to the supply side of the plumbing since it uses PEX tubing but the drains and traps are just plastic and can be somewhat brittle under the best conditions. Be sure you run enough pink stuff down the drains to displace most of the water.

PEX tubing and fittings crack when frozen water is in them as well. So will stainless steel, brass, cast iron and more.

Bottom line: Winterize before cold.

And the osmosis filters should be removed pre winterizing and brought to warm. Filter bypass hoses are then installed so the rig can be winterized with air/ antifreeze without making a mess.
