full timing

i'm curious this question is for the full timers that the rv is your only home what do you do when the rv has to go in for repairs an they have to hold it for an extended period of time

I have been fortunate and all facilities permitted me to sleep in my coach at nite. Sometime inside and sometimes outside the building in the lot with extension cord.That is the condition I make before agreeing to let anyone work on my coach.

Many RV repair shops have RV hookups and permit owners to stay in their coaches at night. Some don't, and some repairs may prohibit staying in the coach.

We have been fortunate. In 9 years of full-timing (8 years in the motor home we used to have and 1 year in our current 5th wheel), we only had to spend 1 night in a motel because of repairs.

I've not had to deal with that either. However; if I ever do, I expect I will do the same thing I did when something major needed done to my S&B home - find another place to stay - either friends or hotel. Or, maybe a swell time to go on a cruise since RV "storage" is taken care of.

Come to think of it, I carry all my tent camping gear with me, maybe I would toss it in the Jeep and go find a nice spot in the forest for a few days. I've been doing this "glamping" thing so long, maybe getting back to nature would be good for me. Probably not so good for my back though....

I haven't had to surrender to the shop for any work that took more than a day or two. So far, I've been able to schedule my trips to the dealer with enough lead time that they've been able to confirm they've had any parts I've needed ... and have lived in the coach while it's been being worked on. I gotta say - my dealer (Veurinks RV in Grand Rapids, MI) has been exceptional to work with in this regard. Originally, I was a little concerned about purchasing from a dealership that's nearly 200 miles from my home - and assumed that I'd ultimately end up taking my coach to a facility closer to home for repairs.


However, so far, Veurinks' timeliness and quality of work have made making the drive for service seem worthwhile. Their hospitality when I'm there make the occasional service trip actually sort of fun! I'm able to do my day job remotely - so I simply drive up the evening before my service appointment such that I'm sitting there when they open in the morning and then work from the coach while they do their thing. So far, it's been painless and has worked very well for me.

Our coach is 12 years old now and we have lived in it full time for 8 years. In that time, we spent a month in a shop for an interior remodel and spent every night except 3 in the coach. We spend 3 night in a hotel while they were removing/replacing the bedroom and bathroom flooring. I do most of the maintenance on the coach. Our last visit to a "shop" was fall of '09 except for a l/o/f last Jan at a Speedco. Took about one hour.
