GA RV Taxes

Looking at purchasing a class-A soon but was wondering what type of personal property or licensing taxes GA imposes on RV owners?

I've previously owned a boat in GA and man the personal property taxes were steep.

Thanks in advance!

My sister and BIL live in GA and own a motorhome. They complain VERY loudly about the personal property taxes, which are indeed "steep." Looks like there were some changes to the ad valorum tax code as of March of this year. http://motor.etax.dor.ga.gov/motor/MVDOnline.aspx

Thanks Sarah for that info!

Mines down to $1,200 a year yahoo. As you know it depends on what county you live in, like Fulton (Atlanta ) probably a lot higher. Rv's are not like boats in ga.

Yea I figured it would depend on the county like vehicle ad-valorem, which is crazy! Gotta love the taxes in GA...not! Thanks for the info

With the revision of the tax code, the annual property tax has been eliminated on new purchases. Instead, the new tax is a combination of sales and up-front property tax. On my previous MH, I paid the sales tax when I bought it and then the annual tax which was approx $800. Under the new code, when I purchased my new MH, I paid the 7% tax up front and now I only have to pay the $20 annual registration fee. Since both my MH and toad were purchased under the new program, I opted to keep my residency in Georgia as we start our fulltiming adventures.

Is that applicable to all counties in GA?

I'm not an authority on it, but the way I read it, it applies to all counties. Sure worked that way in my case.

This is Correct information! The new law covers all counties in GA!

"Vehicles purchased on or after March 1, 2013 and titled in this state will be exempt from sales and use tax and the annual ad valorem tax. Instead, these vehicles will be subject to a new, one-time title ad valorem tax that is based on the value of the vehicle.

In addition, if you purchase and title a vehicle between January 1, 2012 and March 1, 2013, you may be eligible to opt-in to the new title ad valorem tax. "

Thanks for the info and link. I'm glad GA changed the law. Since retiring from the Army in'05 and residing in GA I've paid a lot in vehicle tags over the years. Thanks again

How do they determine the value of a used RV? I've heard it's based on the puirchase price and also heard it's on some book value.

Also I just happened to think...dangerous, I know. If I buy a MH and pay the tax, then sell it next year, the state will collect taxes again from the new owner on almost the same value. Is the state double dipping?

Question.. For assorted reasons if I decide to kiss Michigan Goodby as my "Home state" Georgia is an option. For one thing I spend a good part of the winter just 3 miles from GA (IN SC) and for another... Darling Daughter lives in Darian (About 39 Miles from FL as the freeway wanders).

How would I get taxed.. To make it easy assume a 100,000 base sticker price when new (NOT what i paid but it's a nice round figure).

I don't have any experience or specific knowledge about a how this works for new residents who are registering/titling their vehicle in GA. You could try to find that answer here: http://motor.etax.dor.ga.gov/motor/R...oRegister.aspx

Or call the county tag office where you think you might relocate and see if they can help you with your decision.
