Gas Card

I am buying class a and was wondering if gas cards are worth getting instead of paying cash. If so which card would be best?

Publix we buy $50 Shell cards for $40 with $50 in groceries no booze or butts. Amounts to 20% off pump price. Shell rewards gets you another nickel off per. Easy.

we pay cash for very, very little but we also do not carry a balance. that being said we have the Pilot/Flying J RV Plus card which gets us $.05 gallon of the pump price. I'm guessing you can still use that card with cash but you'd have to go inside to the cashier for that. but the real reason we use plastic is to avoid carrying large amounts of cash. so for that reason alone we would encourage you to get a card for fuel at a minimum but do not carry a balance.

It depends a lot on where you travel.
Pilot / Flying J wide spread and worth having especially for a gasser (diesel not so much)
Sams Clubs w/ fuel are generally good price & access.
Many local chains are going to member pricing w/ $0.07 - $0.10 per gal

Why not use a regular rewards card and then find the best price where you are?

Sam's Club Mastercard gives you 5% cash back on fuel purchased anywhere but a direct competitor such as Costco.

I should have mentioned that the Pilot/Flying J RV Plus card is a charge card, not to be confused with a credit card. that card is your discount card AND your payment card. one swipe at the P/FJ pump and you'll see the pump price for gas (all grades) drop by $.05.

the account the card represents links to your credit card or bank account. you'll get an e-mail statement every month showing all your purchases. P/FJ will auto debit the amount on the statement from either a credit card or your bank account. if you choose to debit a credit card your "charge limit' will be limited (not sure of the $ amount). no limit on fuel purchases if linked to a bank account.

The Chase credit card gives 3% cashback when used for fuel and at restaurants and 1% for all other purchases. A gallon of fuel at say, $2.50, comes out to 7½ cents,,, definitely better than the .05 cents per gallon on a lot of cards. Also, there's no limit on how much cashback you can earn. The other good thing, I can use it at any gas station.

We use the card for everything and it's really surprising how fast the cashback builds up. Of course to come out in the good, we do make sure to pay the balance off each month.

Several years ago I got an American Express Blue Bird Card to use with Walmart's Price Catcher program. That program is gone, but I keep the card and use it to purchase fuel for our motorhome. Since the card is pre-pay, I transfer money to it just for fuel and if the card is hacked (it has happened to me once before) only the money I have on the card is at risk and not any of my other accounts.

I have the PenFed card that gives 5% off fuel as long as you buy at the pump. Since we rarely (emergency) buy from truck stops, we save even more, usually another 15 cents a gallon on top of the 5% off.

One advantage of the Flying J card for us gasser owners is the dedicated RV lane at Flying J stations. Lots of major brand stations are not real maneuverable for a 36 foot RV.

Tks for the info as I just bought a '97 Itasca 37rw. Gas pumps are interesting with that length.
