Gas Stations and credit card limit questions

Hello all! So here we are at the start of the 2011 RVing season (at least for us northerners). How are the rest of you handling the credit card limit at the gas stations? Do you go into the gas station beforehand to get the card accepted to fill the rig? Or do you use multiple credit cards up to the $75.00/$100 limit that usually imposed? Does anybody have any tricks of the trade? I can't get another credit card right now, and don't have the Pilot card. Any suggestions, comments are welcome!

I hang up the nozzle and shut down the pump then with the same CC I do it again. It has always worked for me.

Do not forget to press clear after you get your receipts. If not there is a chance a sharp clerk can fill up on your card.

I simply complete the first transaction when the limit is reached and start a new one using the same card. Not a problem so far.

I hate going inside and having to wait in line... TWICE... so I use my card at the pump. When it stops at the limit, I shut down and do it again. I've found that my card usually works twice but then I have to switch to my other card for the third fill.

We use Shell and just call them, tell them I have a MH and I'm traveling. They normally limit cc to 2 uses per day, but lift that limit while I'm on the road. That at least let's me use it more than 2x in a day, doesn't get rid of the $ limit tho.

Hi Purplefans & Harvey,
Consider obtaining a Frequent Fueler card from Pilot/Flying J. Immediately register it for the pump start feature. Contact any Pilot/J cashier to do this. When you stop at a Pilot/J for fuel the pump will recognize you and all you to fill your tank. No matter the amount.

I can use the same CC twice BUT there have been occasions when I'm still not filled. I then resort to a second card to finish filling. The second card may only have $10 - $15 on it. Always use a CC that gives money back!

On occasion I have had to call my CC company and tell them I was on a "road trip" in a motorhome and that $75 x2 was sometimes not enough. They mad a note on my account and I did not have the problem again.

But is this a CC issue or an oil company issue? Speedway for example claims its not their policy to limit sales but the banks' policy. Some other gas stations are less clear as to whose policy it is.
All I know is in this time of $4.00+ gas & diesel the $75 limit makes no sense. Even my previous GMC p/u would exceed $75 on a single fill up.
Quite annoying!

I can go to 2 Shell stations probably 2 miles apart between home and work. The limit at the diesel pump on one is $75. On the other it's $85. Doesn't sound like a limit imposed by my credit card company to me!

Soon, you will have to go in anyway to speak to the loan manager.

The purchase limit on a single CC transaction is set by both the CC company and the merchant.
1. The CC company tells the merchant how much they will guarantee payment on (an example is $75.00 in a single transaction).
2. The merchant can stay with this limit and take no risk, or set their computers to allow a higher limit. If the CC transaction goes south, the merchant would be liable for anything over the $75 example.

This is why most merchants do not allow any more $s pumped than the CC company is willing to guarantee payment.

I contacted Discover Card by email with your exact question. The email reply stated " Discover Card does not impose a dollar limit on purchases at gas stations. Usually this dollar limit is imposed by the credit card processing center used by the chain of gas stations."
Now I have no idea if that is actually true or not, it's just what the email stated. Later, I was told this practice was because the processing center was paid for each transaction, not dollar amount of purchase.
