Gasoline Taxes

A partial explanation of why the price of gas changes from state to state: Here's how much local, state and federal taxes are collected, per gallon, in the states: http://exxonmobil.co/1rHgQiK. Top Three look to be California, New York & Connecticut -- no surprise to anyone who's ever driven through those states.

And these are fixed costs which will be there regardless of the underlying cost of the fuel. With out crumbling roads, the fixed costs will only go up. As Americans use less fuel to power our cars, either by choice of government regulations, there will less revenue from the gas tax leading to either higher fuel taxes or alternate methods of paying for the maintenance required.
